Expanding Our Reach Through the Internet

This is a historic week in the life of our nation: We inaugurated the first African-American president. In doing so, we took a huge step forward in improving race relations and reaffirmed that the American dream is possible for all Americans.

But we need to remember that although we're rejoicing in better race relations, that is not the only issue facing our nation. Sadly, I fear that the installation of Barack Obama as president may be a step backward for the right-to-life and traditional marriage issues.

Like most of you, I watched the inauguration on TV. It was great to hear Pastor Rick Warren give one of the most beautiful invocations I've ever heard, in which he very clearly articulated the importance of following God rather than what has become called "civic religion."

And though there has sometimes been a controversy when a minister mumbles "in the name of Jesus" before saying "amen," Warren was very clear, as we reported in Charisma News Online (which I hope you'll subscribe to, if you haven't already, by clicking here). He closed his invocation with, "In the name of the one who changed my life, Yeshua, Isa, Jesus [Spanish pronunciation], Jesus, who taught us to pray" and then ended with the Lord's Prayer.

Then Obama made a speech in which he talked about the need for change and said we must “begin again the work of remaking America.” His comments resonated with many Americans, but the question is, what kind of change was he referring to? And how do we “remake” America? I believe we are engaged in a spiritual battle and that we need to pray and hold up our new president. I believe there are signs that he's going to govern more from the middle than we initially thought he would, but only time will tell. Regardless of how far to the right or left his decisions appear to be, he's going to need God's help in a way that most of us can't even imagine, due to the enormous pressures on him and the responsibilities of his job.

Many other politicians have articulated sentiments regarding change that were similar to those Obama made--but those men were not elected president. What made the difference? I believe that Obama, unlike any prior presidential candidate, was able to capitalize on the enormous power of the Internet. He not only was able to raise money on the Internet but also was able to build a community and interact with people. He collected information from the people who went to his Web site and sent messages to them that addressed issues relevant to their particular part of the country. For example, he might have written something quite different to a person living near the Mexican border, who is concerned about illegal immigration, than he did to someone in Michigan, where the auto industry seems to be in a freefall.

The same technology Obama used to further his campaign can be used to propagate the gospel. But at this point it is in its infancy. Everyone's trying to figure out how it works--including me. We have reached the point at which we provide interactive media and communicate with people around the world through our e-newsletters. My doing this blog during the last year and soliciting your responses to it is one way for us to personally interact in a way that we haven’t been able to communicate through the medium of print publications. The Internet allows us to inexpensively reach people we could never reach in any other way, to cross international lines, to interact with them and create community. Other than the family what community is stronger, or should be stronger, than the body of Christ?

In addition to making widespread communication possible, the Internet is unsurpassed as a medium for discipling and mentoring. Interestingly, it is beginning to be used for mentoring, or coaching, by some secular people who are reaching out to the Christian community as well.

On the day Obama was inaugurated I went to a seminar in Miami about how to utilize the Internet. It was fascinating to hear how companies are beginning to connect with customers in new ways to grow their businesses. As I listened, I wondered how we in the church can take advantage of this new technology to advance the kingdom of God.

I met one of the speakers after the seminar and learned that he is an on-fire, Spirit-filled Christian. I had an opportunity to visit with him, and we talked about the fact that in the Christian community there are some who have been successful on the Internet, but no one--including us--has yet emerged as a real leader. I'll write more about this later. But the nature of a blog like this is to give regular communication, at times shorter than at others.

And I also want your input. I'd like to know what you have seen on the Internet that you really like, what needs you have in your own life and in your church, and what things you see in the body of Christ, in our nation, and worldwide that we ought to be thinking and brainstorming about.

Thanks for your input.

Greetings! Yes I have been waiting for this opportunity!

How about emblems (click on for news updates), that we can copy and paste on our Myspace page and Facebook? I usually copy and paste Charisma articles as bulletins on myspace, and include the website address. I sometimes allow for comments, yet lately....NOT....I only want to get the message across. I have had "new myspace friends" that are so called "coaches" I pray for The Lord to guide me and lead me, so I accept them because I do spread the Gospel on Myspace and Facebook. Blessings a Sister in Christ

I have recently begun to receive your wonderfully up-lifting and spiritually refreshing devotionals, but I find the numerous errors within them to be worthy of complaint.

Remember, you are doing this ministry "as unto the Lord," and He deserves excellence--even in the matter of careful editing.

I am all for change but I have already begun to read articles in the trade I am in (Medical) that is talking about shutting down the type of surgery center I work in. I am worried because if that happens then many, many people will loose their jobs all accross America. Big lobby groups in their greed want it all and forget the little people. Makes me sick!

    Steve,

Before you can harness the internet you need to find a trained staff of technology professionals. This will probably be difficult for Charismatics given their anti-education, anti-intellectualism, anti-university, philosophies.

So in the Charismatic world you will probably find a great deal of technology people who have been "taught by God" or "taught by the Holy Spirit" to build websites, etc, which basically means they read a few books and played around.

Charismatics should start a national and international campaign to reverse their anti-education platform.

    Greetings Steve,
I agree that all of us who call ourselves Christians and have access to the internet should learn how to use this technology to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I am on Myspace and Facebook.
Every chance I get I use those 2 resources to try to reach people who may not have a relationship with the Lord.
We can blog, we can spread encouragement to others by just giving an encouraging word using Scripture.
I have even used some of your daily devotionals and sent them to my friends.
There is a gentleman by the name of Ken Jones on myspace who does a wonderful job of blogging his thoughts, his experiences, his revelations of how he came through those. He encourages people to read his blogs and to respond to what he has written.
This method could by done by thousands of us to spread the gospel.

As far as the changes that Obama has talked about so much, it sounds to me that this man has presented a side of himself that is so FALSE. Only God can remake America.
I will pray for our president and the others that are in authority, but I will not allow myself to fall for a slick tongue that goes against everything that God's Word has to say.

Steve, I do hope and pray that you will continue to find ways to reach more people by using the internet.

May God's blessings and favor be upon you.

    Education,

I am a semester away from my PhD in educational psychology. I am a Charismatic with two earned degrees (English/journalism and education) from quality institutions (Magna Cum Laude for undergrad and 4.0 grad--, including current PhD work at Texas A&M University in College Station). I teach university-level students. I read great philosophers and writers. I also read CNN (not Fox) online to get a view of what's occurring in the nation, as well as other "liberal" sites. I have published articles, taught Bible studies I have written by studying, and worked as an information systems coordinator for a major hospital.

The Holy Spirit teaches me daily, but I recognize the Lord gave me my brain. I use it. I work hard. And I pray hard. I speak in tongues; I dance in worship. And my students at the schools where I teach and have taught consistently rank me as both intelligent and the most joy-filled professor they have had.

I would like you to realize that the anointing might teach me, but that doesn't make me anti-education, or any other anti.

    Just a flip side opinion.

What ever you do PLEASE do it with LOVE...The world and the church has exibited so little Love and God said: "By this (Love) the world will know that you are mine IF you have Love for one for another". Love is the very foundation of all Father God does.
The answer I get most when I ask someone why they don't go to church is... because I don't want to be judged by them.

My name is Molotov Mitchell, a Christian conservative filmmaker who shares your vision. I thought I'd just hop on your radar, since the internet is our focus. My film company's been able to reach tens of millions with political and religious internet videos just this year alone. Our work has been featured on the cover of the NY Times, Fox News, MSNBC, Harper's, Wired, etc. but we have yet to be embraced or utilized by the Christian community. Of course our work has occasionally been inflammatory (we're heavily critical of Obama), but we're taking a stand and getting the message across with a measurable impact (a positive impact, that is). We just unveiled our youth-based news organization called We Are Thinking, but we're having trouble finding sponsors...email me if you'd like to talk more!

There are many apostles, prophets and other five-fold ministry leaders who are using the internet and have been for years now. Many teach over the internet, do radio programs. I have been doing an enewsletter for over four years not. This is nothing new. It sounds to me like you are making excuses to yourself because you don't like the President. I am praying that you will begin to pray and deal with the issues Christians need to deal with. The spiritual climate our nation. You cannot legislate righteousness.

    Hey Steve,

You may want to get some of your key staff(even some of your productions and sale people) blogging about Strang Com and Charisma. It may help people to connect with the organization if there was a plurality of voices beyond you, Lee, and Marcus. Destiny Image is using some Facebook Aps to connect authors with end users who can ask questions and get to know them better. It is pretty handy.

As it concerns this whole shift, it seems like the church in general is totally clueless as to how to harness this epic shift in culture and technology. I find it ironic that many of the ministries out there that think they are "on the cutting edge" are totally irrelevant to society in general. It is pretty scary how far away we are from even appearing on the radar of these seven mountains that are talked about today.

Just my two cents. Bless you Steve!

Read the articles "J'ACCUSE" and "FALL OF AMERICA, FALL OF THE WEST" at http://www.israelmybeloved.com/ and the article "Watchmen from Jerusalem #1 2009 under Watchmen at http://www.ifij.org/all/ Compared to these articles the item you published by Loren Sandford is ridiculous.

"Many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths." The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem." Isaiah 2:3

In response to the above comment made by "Anonymous." I agree with you 100% that only God can remake America. However, He need men and women in the earth to carry out the work to remake this great nation. He will not leave His throne and come down in this earth to do the remaking, He will use people; People like President Obama, myself, you, and others. Until we realize that America cannot be remake without the people getting involve, there will be no remaking.

All this sounds so go but do you see that it sounds like we are all aganist each other. If we are ever to see a change in any thing we must first realize who's side we are on. God's or man's or both. If we are on God's side than we should walk and conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of God and in love for each other. The Lord Jesus said He gave us two commandments. To love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our mind and with all our strenght, ahd to love each other He did not say to just love Christians but everyone. So we realize that God will us men to rebuild this country He will use what ever pleases Him. So why not fall in behind our God in Unity and work together to get the job done. Nothing is done that God doesnot see nothing is said that He does not hear, and no plan is accomplished that He doesn't whant.

Who ever heard of a family wherein the members were not allowed to offer strong differing opinions to one another? How did we get to the place where this is now called "unloving" and "sowing seeds of disunity" etc., etc.??? Are we as the Body of Christ a family, or not? If so, then let's get over it if we make a comment and somebody else actually has the audacity to strongly disagree with us. This isn't unloving, nor is it disunity....it's called being part of a FAMILY!!

Steve, you wrote, "We inaugurated the first African-American president. In doing so, we...reaffirmed that the American dream is possible for all Americans."
This is, unfortunately, not true. It may have been true for Abraham Lincoln, but not today. Obama is the product of very privileged protection and provision by an elite ruling class with intent on dismantling the United States financially and militarily. By all indicators, they have succeeded. Obama is a Marxist whose goal is to create a new "middle class" by robbing from the rich and "spreading the wealth around" (his words). This will preserve his power among the millions of lower class and immigrants who will be loyal party supporters and will grossly outnumber the Christian and conservative voting block. His theme is "power to the people" which is a euphamism for communist revolution. In reality, his election is a political coup of prophetic proportions. The "American Dream" is, in its classical sense, now dead for the majority—unless it is redefined as cradle-to-grave government "care" and unlimited cheap entertainment. As Kissinger and Obama supporters come out of the closet gloating, it is now the dawning of the "New World Order." This is not conspiracy talk, this is now mainstream headline news. Christians need to prepare for increased persecution and shift their focus from "renewing" or "restoring" our fallen nation and its "American Dream" to preaching the Word, and making disciples. That is our God-given mandate, because his kingdom is "not of this world" which is destined to perish.

Steve, you credit Rick Warren for praying in Jesus' name—but he unfortunately also prayed in the name of a false christ, "Isa," which is by biblical definition, "another Jesus."

As a former missionary to an Islamic country, Daniel Cordell at lovefortruth.com points out a problem with this new "unity" approach to prayer. He writes,

"What’s significant is the name 'Isa' being prayed by the 'evangelical' Warren. Isa is strictly Koranic and used by Arab Muslims. Even Arab Christians don’t refer to Isa, but to Yesua...Isa was not Jewish, but Palestinian. Isa did not die on the cross but instead had someone die in his place. Isa is a Muslim prophet...yet, Rick prayed in the name of Isa."

How can a leading evangelical be so blind as to pray in the name of a false christ, simply to appease those who cry for "unity with diversity"? Such a prayer, in fact, is not only heretical, but an abomination before the One who "gave his only begotten son...."

God will not share his glory with a Muslim "Isa" because this false christ is neither historically or religiously the Son of the Living God.

As "America's Pastor" Rick Warren should have recognized this error, and should be careful how he unites with men and women of "faith" for the expansion of his politically correct "PEACE" plan, which places unity above the Gospel of God.

The secular world and christian world are all asking the same question.... "How to I expand my business or ministry via the internet". How do I embrace this great technology and expand my vision, increase my donors, increase my giving and or increase my exposure.
In order to answer this question, we have to take the time to understand what it is we are trying to accomplish. Or better yet, how is God working through me to accomplish his goals. What is it that I want to accomplish?

Could it be that easy? Well sort of..... its a start actually... its the end. let me explain

We must know what the end looks like so we can begin with a media plan to accomplish a goal. So is Facebook, Myspace, and You tube your final destination for your media campaign? Maybe.
Should you put together a national media campaign and spend $25,000 a month? Maybe. What do you want to do what is the ending look like, what is in your spirit.
As marketers we need to know the goal, and who you are trying to influence. Should you be embracing the internet and its new technology and all that it brings? Maybe? Maybe not? is this where your core demo is spending most of their time. Or are they watching 7 1/2 hours of television a day? Figure out these questions and your medium what it is your suppose to do will be revealed to you.

I would like to hear your interpretation of this "Isa" that Warren referred to in his closing. Can you explain who or what this is? I have never heard it before and I am now hearing that it refers to a jesus of the Muslim faith. Is this so. and if it is why was there a reference to a Jesus other than the one true person of the Godhead?

So I had the crazy idea and still have it, to put Jesus on Facebook. Putting together all of His profile and try to send a request to become friends to all my friends who do not know Christ.
I could update his status like : I am listening right now to prayers!
Well my only thing is that I am sure to get prayer requests and weird questions and so on. And also do you think Jesus would mind to put him on Facebook? :)

I must agree with the comments from "Education" (4:28pm)In the church, unfortunately, we tend to hire undereducated, under-experienced people for jobs they have no business holding--simply because they are "Christians". They are still not qualified to get the job done. So its like anything else. Hire the people--who have the education and experience. Tell them what you want. And they will do it.
Now, are they related to Aunt Sallie? That's nice. Are they dating your daughter? Cool. But if they don't have the chops to perform, don't hire them. We do too much of this in the religious world and then wonder why our results are so poor.

Gosh. Can people be this dumb? Rick Warren did not pray in the "name of the false Christ Isa." "Isa" is Jesus in Arabic. Arab Christians who speak Arabic call Jesus in their native language "Isa." Can people be this dumb?

I guess this ignorance is simply a byproduct of the Charismatic/Pentecostal war on rational thinking and logic, intelligence, and education.

Steve Strang and Charisma Magazine put George Bush on the cover and made him out to be a saint and now they are patronizing their African American subscribers with, "...we took a huge step forward in improving race relations and reaffirmed that the American dream is possible for all Americans." They put Sarah Palin on the cover - why? She is an example of what? to whom? The Charisma Forum is filled with racist venom cloaked in religious dialogue blasting President Obama. God can change the hearts of kings. He can change President Obama's heart on abortion and gay marriage. I doubt if God can use you and your magazine. We know President Obama won't be on the cover of Charisma unless there is a tragedy. Sad, so sad! Mr. Strang, your true colors are showing. And for the record, I am not African American!

I'm steeped in writing for the interactive online world. I think Charisma has been on the edge of using the Internet to its fullest extent but so much more can be done. We see the signs of people seeking content online versus print with the shut down of newspapers. I think Charisma is rethinking itself as a content provider which is a good direction. Here's some suggestions...
*An RSS feed from your content that I can post on my blogs (myspace/facebook/ning)
*A way to comment instantly or respond to columns or email newsletters like Lee's newsletter. I usually e him directly since I know him.
*Maybe a social network of Charisma's readers - segment even further with CR readers, MT readers and so forth. I'm right in the middle of building a social network for another vertical industry. This build relationships with the readers. Ning is a good example of this concept.

That's all I can think of so far. Like I said, I read every newsletter you and Lee write. Thanks for doing such a great job expressing God's heart on burning issues. God bless you, Leilani Haywood

I would love to read a truthful comment by some of you people who pretend you will pray for our new president. You know, one where immediately after your double minded-false assertion that you will pray for him you DON'T add your "but" to it. Either you are willing to pray for the man honestly trusting God to do exceedingly abundantly, above all we could ask or even think in and through this man if we Christians would just STOP being so two faced. Are we trusting Obama based on what he said OR are we trusting what God said--....He holds the heart of the king in His hand and is able to turn it whichever way He wills. Psalm 144:10 says,...."It is He (GOD)that giveth salvation to kings....". I have a great desire in my heart to see God do a miracle in Obama's heart so that his eyes are opened and he is able to see clearly what is right, bow his knee to the living God and turn from the godless thoughts and actions and rise up and become the president who boldly proclaims the name of Jesus and allows God to work His will and plan for this great nation of ours. This is what I know God is able to do if we would stop hindering his work with the hypocritical lies and negative words we keep spewing out into the atmosphere. When are we going to once again LET GOD BE GOD? Only He knows the beginning from the end where President Barack Obama is concerned.

    Dear Steve,
I just wanted to get the word out that I have a couple of myspace profiles that I manage. One is my own. The other is the profile for the ministry I am helping my mom and sister to launch. Both are ministry oriented. I started mine last Febuary after receiving instruction from the Lord during my very first 21 day fast, which I participated in with Jentezen Franklin and Free Chapel Worship Center. My sister launched the lighthouse page in the spring of 2008. Of course, we have the two profiles linked together through the friends lists. I have been doing this for almost a year now. I just came out of the 21 day fast again. I have received instruction from the the Lord for the blogs through February. If you or anyone who reads this knows of anyway that I can expand my ministry on myspace please let know. I waisted much of my born-again Christian life trying to live only for myself. Ministry has become the central focus in my life today. I want to invite everyone to visit me on myspace at myspace.com/tadamrogers or my family's ministry page at myspace.com/lighthouse_com_min. If anyone has any input as to how I can make my online ministry more productive, and reach more people, please message me and let me know. Thanks.
    In Christ,
    Adam Rogers

We will not always agree on different issues, but while we are disagreeing, we must be mindful that our disagreement is out of pure love and not out of hatred. Search your heart Mr. Strang, because according Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
