Strang Report: Christian Response to Financial Crisis

Christian Response to Financial Crisis

By Steve Strang

I've never seen anything like the financial crisis that has hit Wall Street and our nation in the last month. If you're like me, you have investments for your retirement, and you feel helpless to know what to do. Probably the worst action to take would be to sell everything because history has proven that the economy will probably rebound.

Last Sunday I had the privilege of visiting Abba's House (Central Baptist Church) near Chattanooga, Tennessee, pastored by Dr. Ron Phillips. During the service Phillips introduced his pastor of stewardship, Alan Johnston, who has a very impressive financial background and is an expert in what's happening on the stock market.

Johnston shared with the congregation that the worst thing that can happen is for people to react out of fear. You can see for yourself what he said by clicking on the link to the video below.

View Video

Below I share some thoughts and financial insights from Michael Cozakas, who is a part of Apostle C. Peter Wagner's network and the founder of Eagle's Heart Ministries. I have shared his comments with several people, and they felt it would be good information to pass along.

Meanwhile, click on the ad below announcing a conference call with Larry Bates, one of our authors who wrote a book several years ago titled The New Economic Disorder. I will report more about his book in a future Strang Report.

Long before President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in his 1933 inaugural address, said in reference to the depressed economic condition of our nation, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself," God Himself had given us the admonition not to fear. He said through the prophet Isaiah, "'Fear not, for I have redeemed you. …When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. … Since you were precious in My sight, you have been honored, and I have loved you'" (Is. 43:2-4, NKJV).

Johnston says that historically there have been 10 cycles during which the stock market has fallen even more than it has this month. Each time it does, there is usually a reason. This time it is the credit crunch and the banking failures that have recently taken place. However, the government has stepped in to stabilize things, and it's probably just a matter of time before things return to normal.

As Johnston shared with the congregation at Abba's House, we should continue in faith, continue our giving and look to the Lord, who is our real source, not the stocks we own or the economy in the country in which we live.

I urge you to forward this video by Alan Johnston to as many people as possible. We must get the word out. In order to understand the times in which we're living, we must learn to discern them, as the sons of Issachar did (see 1 Chron. 12:32), and view them in light of the Word of God.

Please leave your thoughts on the blog.

The Economic Bailout
By Michael Cozakas

October 2008

I was in Norway during the most recent economic events that have caused such a stir throughout the world. I heard people tell me that the U.S. financial markets were collapsing and unprecedented losses would occur. When I realized the nature of the problem I reflected on what was causing this catastrophic event to occur.

What Happened?

First and foremost, I believe this is a godly correction and it is a good thing for our economy. The mortgage meltdown, which has caused most of this, was brought on by some greedy people [who] departed from sound economic practices. The bankers that caused this put many people into mortgages that they could not afford or qualify for. They convinced people that if they purchased homes beyond their earning capability they would realize an increase in their quality of living.

The bankers developed mortgage packages with artificially low interest rates that made the loan payments for the first few years affordable and easy to make. No one ever looked past the initial rate as the people were told that they could always refinance, and they really should move up and enjoy their new lifestyle. To make the problem worse, the bankers then released loan packages called "stated income loans" that had no income verification. These loans were given to borrowers based on what they said they earned. It is, and has been, common banking practice to verify everything a borrower states so that people are held accountable to their word.

Many people were convinced by the bankers, the mortgage companies, and the mortgage processors, that they should get the home of their dreams and take full advantage of the American dream. As we all know, these practices moved the banking community away from good stewardship principles, and they were motivated by their greed.

As the loans came due, and the market conditions changed, their dream homes become a curse. Because they were living well beyond their means, they suffered through foreclosures, bankruptcies and personal financial devastation. This caused the mortgage meltdown to occur, which affected our old and stable financial institutions; thereby creating the current economic conditions. Suffice it to say, there was nothing godly in anything our financial institutions did. Praise the Lord, He brought about a correction.

Most of us understand good stewardship, and most of us understand when something is not right. We all are given a moral compass. As these events occur, which will shape our life for generations, we need to see that God is in this so we all have real hope that this is moving by the hand of God for our good.

The Bailout

Interestingly enough, while I believe God caused this, I can also see God's grace at work here. When I first heard that our elected officials were faced with approving a 700 billion dollar economic bailout to help our financial institutions survive, I was relieved that our government was actually going to do something to help—then I quickly realized that the taxpayer base would pay it back. The number is so large, it will affect us and our children. This cannot be good, and why should we help financial institutions that strayed away from sound banking practices? They caused the problem; they should suffer through the chaos as this is righteous.

History

Shortly after that, I read an article that said this is not the first time that the U.S. government has bailed out the economy. In fact, this is the fourth time, and every time the government has bailed out the economy the people eventually prospered.

The first time this occurred, the economic bailout was suggested by and administered by Alexander Hamilton. The government purchased properties, held on to them, and then sold them for a profit; thereby replenishing the treasury. We know Alexander Hamilton to be a man of God and this was his idea. In a time of crisis, we work together for the good of the country where we live.

The last time this occurred was during the '80s when the S&L [savings and loan] meltdown occurred. A similar set of circumstances happened, and our government stepped in and bailed out the problem. The government formed a company that held the properties and then they were sold at a profit. The money was repaid at a profit for the people.

When I started to see the truth of this, I realized that while God drove a correction that was needed, He also opened a door that, based on history, could actually profit the people in time. While I don't believe our financial institutions deserve anything, I do believe that we should seize the hope that God has given us. I also believe that this is a great time of fear for the country. The media has learned that people pay more attention to it when the news is bad, so the media has learned to play on our fears.

Faith, Hope and Trust

This is a time for the body of Christ to hold onto our faith and trust the Lord and His ways. I know that through faith and trust, we will overcome this and our character in Christ will grow more day by day. I also believe that those people who have no relationship with the Lord will be driven to seek Him and find their faith. The old adage that says there are no atheists in a foxhole tells us that in a time of crisis the people seek their God. I believe more people will be driven to the church and more people will find their God.

As believers, it is our responsibility to let people see the Spirit of the Lord that abides in us. We must show our faith as we go through these difficult times. As people around us walk in fear, we can walk in faith and keep our peace, joy and righteousness. When people see the character of Christ in us by the way we conduct ourselves in this time of crisis, they will ask the questions that will truly lead them to their God.

I think this is an incredible time of faith and restoration for all people. This is a time when God is gathering the faithful to lead the unfaithful to a place of peace. We are not in a time of catastrophic doom—so don't let the media rob you of your faith!

We are in a time of great change, but we all know that great change is required and we all know that God is committed to our growth. Don't let the enemy rob you of your hope. Let your faith and trust in the Lord our God grow day by day as we work together to build His Kingdom.

An excellent, well-balanced assessment. This tone is far better than the shrill, hateful, often self-righteous proclamations that we so often hear at times like this. In Isaiah 8 God warned his servant, Isaiah not to think like the people around him and not to fear what they feared. Isaiah was to fear the Lord, reverence Him. If he did He would see the Lord become a stronghold. I am applying that a little freely perhaps, but the principle is clear: Honor God. Let your honor of God define your outlook. Thanks for helping us do that.

Excellent, and not at all what I expected in light of some of the recent political commentary. Scriptural truth triumphs over Republican talking points! Keep it up.

Thanks Steve for providing some excellent resources for people in these times of unrest. This is encouraging and your exhortation to not fear is great advice.

Keep telling it like it is.

Please address this statement<" continue to give and fear not what is happneing to US economy". What should a family do when there is no income coming in.

The Scriptural truths believers need to bear in mind are these: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Mat 6:19-21). While I appreciate Steve's desire to bring hope and encouragement, there are a couple of points that should cause serious students of God's word to test the word from Michael Cozakas, evidently an NAR kingdom-builder. Steve Strang should be aware that C. Peter Wagner (who calls himself a "Super Apostle") is working to abolish pastoral authority in all denominations and replace it with a neo-apostolic and neo-prophetic hierarchy that he calls a "New Apostolic Reformation," or NAR. (Please test this out!) Like the New Agers and cults, their hope is not in heaven future, but in heaven "here and NOW," as believers take control of this present earth. This contradicts Scripture, and the words of Jesus, who told Pilate, "My kingdom is not of this world...." So please be wary of any "alignment" with self-titled Apostles working to lay another foundation. See Rev. 2:2, 2 Cor 11:12-13.

    Hi Steve,

Thank you for your encouragement to the body of Christ through your weekly reports.

We pray this will also encourage you and His Church during this time of national and global economic crisis, with many wild swings in the markets, and great uncertainty. The good news is God in His goodness showed what was coming, and what He would do in the midst of it (see “Shifting Economies” below). He has a specific plan.

I highly doubt that this financial mess is God's doing anymore than my alcoholism is God's doing - people, start taking responsibility for yourselves and your representatives! Our bad choices and irresponsibility and greed did this, along with power hungry,self-serving politicians: DON'T BLAME GOD!

Finally, it might be nice that our government might in time make a profit from this - in the meantime, it still comes out of the taxpayes pockets (40% of Americans don't pay them, so it is really the top 60% wage earners who will do this covering for many in the 40% bracket who were a part of this mess). Once the government takes your money, it is not going to give it back. If they do make a profit, do you expect to see your family or self reimbursed? Not a chance. The government consumes, it doesn't create. Lets get that straight. Our colonies went to war over lesser financial and legislative matters. Wake up church and repent! May God have mercy on us all.

God Lets Us Decide to Live in Fear . . . or Faith

The news the last 2 weeks has attempted to make the average American believe we are on the brink of total disaster. Christians who read the newspaper more than they read the Word of God are becoming affected. Jesus spoke to His followers about times of great difficulty. His advice to them was "When you see these things, look up. Your redemption draws near." (Lk 21:28)

4 Facts to Remember in Seasons of National Crisis

    1. God's Promises Never Change
    2. The Holy Spirit Never Stops Speaking
    3. God Promises "The wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just." (Prov 13:22b)
    4. "The heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord." (Prov 21:1)

I believe what we are experiencing now is minor compared with what God will allow to happen to the United States and the rest of the world. We are fast approaching a day when believers with no personal daily time alone in His presence will faint. Simply going to church for one hour a week will become obviously insufficient.

4 Ways To Maintain Your Joy In Crisis Hours

    1. Enter The Presence Of God Daily. "In His presence is fullness of joy." (Ps 16:11)
    2. Remind Yourself Daily The God Of All Wisdom & Power Lives In You.
    3. Stay Faithful In The Financial Covenant Of Tithing. God is not obligated to help or protect a non-tither. (Mal 3:8-11)
    4. Remember Ps 126:6 "He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him."

When God was judging Egypt, He was prospering Israel. I believe incredible days of harvest and blessing are going to explode in the lives of God's people. Expect miracles in your house!
The fight for the presidency is spiritual warfare...don't you see whats happening in France, England and many other countries of the world, how their tolerance caused them to lose their democracy and freedom...Christians open your eyes, use your God given discernment...stop fighting, arguing, murmering and complaining and pray...

Americans have had a wonderful life in a wonderful country. Everybody in the world wants to live in America. Now, Americans want 'change.' They are about to get it.

The Presidential election of the most liberal and inexperienced politician in America, a man with strong Muslim ties and a strong Muslim background; a man who IS linked to domestic terrorism through Bill Ayers, and to numerous pro-Islamic and anti-American advisors - all of whom side with Israel's Leftist enemies (including some Israelis) as well as to anti-American,anti-Semites like Reverend Wright; a man whose supporters are among the same people who brought down the American economy with their 'liberalism' in money-lending, is just about a fait accompli. I have no idea what has happened to the America I knew. I have no idea what happened to the American Jewish community's support for Israel, how it has been washed away by deceptive self-interest and propaganda lies. But when I think what is in store for the America which is doing this to herself, and the American Jewish community who thinks by selling out Israel it will somehow achieve "change" that will benefit it, my heart aches.

I know that I am helpless to stop this juggernaut towards disaster. Perhaps it is America's turn to experience first hand what we in Israel experienced: the consequences of electing a leadership which does not have the best interests of the country in mind; which has an agenda that has nothing to do with those interests. Sometimes people have to make horrible mistakes in order to learn that they are horrible mistakes. In Israel, this included over 25,000 terrorist attacks. Children dying in the streets. Being afraid to walk to the bus stop or even enter a store......

Americans have had a wonderful life in a wonderful country. Everybody in the world wants to live in America. Now, Americans want 'change.' They are about to get it.

May God watch over them. Maybe this is how God intends to get them all to realize how good they had it but all they do is murmur and complain... I wonder how they'll feel when they are sitting here with the rest of us, Obama in the White House, and Iran with a atom bomb.

"Have not I commanded you? Be strong, vigorous, and
very courageous. Be not afraid, neither be dismayed, for
the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

Fear is a powerful emotion. We all face it at some time in our lives. The fear of financial ruin, failure in a relationship or job, fear of sickness or death, or just fear of not being accepted can lead our emotions down a path that makes us believe that certain doom is near.

But we don’t have to accept this as our destiny if we understand how to combat and rise above it. One of the greatest spiritual battlegrounds is the ongoing tension between faith and fear. Here’s a simple working definition of each of these words:

FAITH: Trusting God as our source of life. FEAR: Trusting man as our source of life.

Since the garden of Eden, the enemy has used fear, tied to lack of provision, to make us strive for self-sufficiency. The devil convinced Adam and Eve that God wasn’t really going to come through and that they should take matters into their own hands.

When I think about how many times I have done that in the past, I am extremely grateful for God's mercy in giving us second chances. I realize we can’t simply ignore circumstances. We live in intense times. But make no mistake, just like Adam and Eve, if we spend any length of time right now camping around our undesirable circumstances, we will lose heart and put ourselves in a position where we can’t trust God.

Despite the negative headlines and reports of financial ruin, we can be confident that God is in control and that He is our ultimate provider. There is hope!

“Thanks be to God, who ALWAYS leads us in triumph.” (2 Corinthians 2:14)
This incredible promise from God assures us that He will lead us into great victory when we follow Jesus wherever He goes! So right now we have two basic choices: Allow the fear of our future to ruin us or jump out of the boat and run after the Lord -- even when things don’t seem logical.

It is a natural reaction to shrink back during times of intensity, lack or storms. But in order to achieve victory God’s way, we must go in the opposite direction, which ultimately will lead us to face our fears head on. The bible is filled God's commands to “fear not.” In order to mature in the Lord and become a powerful vessel that God can fill up again and again, then pour out into the world, we have to discover how to face fear and not shrink back.

Practically speaking, we live in intense days, especially with all that is taking place in the world economy. But during difficultly or “famine,” we can’t allow fear, greed and selfishness to reign. Instead, through faith, we should look for opportunities to be overwhelmingly generous to others.

God doesn’t call us to be careless, but He does call us to be radical. If we are going to demonstrate His love in radical ways to the world, then we should realize that this is a time to plant radically, sow radically and give everything we have to the Lord radically.

Proverbs 11:25 tells us, “A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” As we reach out to others through giving and investing in their lives, God will always be faithful to meet our own needs as well. And to the measure that we do it to others, God will do in return for us. (Luke 6)

The crux of fear is that the enemy uses a poker face, smoke and mirrors to make us think that God isn’t who He says He is. The crux of faith in God is that sometimes we can’t see around the next corner where He calls us to be with Him; we just know He’s there and that He wants us to follow. But as the heroes of faith throughout the bible and beyond have proven, following Jesus is ALWAYS worth it.

There is an increasingly popular phrase that illustrates this so well: “Live in such a way that your life would not make sense if God did not exist.” If we will do this, then it will be easy to prove God’s existence. People will just have to look at our lives!

    This Week
Prayerfully consider what God can do through you. Live through a lens of faith, not fear. Look for opportunities to make God known through generous and sacrificial giving and living. As this happens, prepare to be blown away at what God will do in your own life over time.

    Prayer
"Father, I thank you today that you know the plans you have for me, and they are plans for me to prosper and have a wonderful future. Please give me the opportunity and courage to overcome the enemy and give you glory by investing in the lives of others, through my time, my treasure and my talent."

My goal is to be a woman of faith who can take such things in stride with Him. But when I'm losing that stride, I've found the best thing I can do is honestly take these feelings to God where they can be traded for His perspective and His comforting assurance.

Though God does not always change my circumstances the way I want Him to, He can and does change my perspective on those circumstances -- enabling me to endure them.

God listens when we complain about injustice. He understands when we feel shortchanged or opposed. Read through the gospel accounts of Jesus' life and you'll be reminded of just how much Jesus can relate to undeserved opposition!

Be honest before God in prayer today. While maintaining a holy respect for Him and thanksgiving for His saving grace, pour out the good, the bad and the ugly of your feelings. As Habakkuk, Job and others discovered, God can handle our intense emotions and questions. He may not explains Himself fully to us -- perhaps because we can't fully understand -- but He will flood us with His love when we come humbly and honestly before Him and pour out our heart.

Dear Lord, it is often hard for me to deal graciously with the difficult situations in my life. Help me to see them through Your eyes. Help me to endure, with grace, all that You allow into my life. Fill me with Your peace and love today. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
