Washington Post Lampoons Palin and Pentecostals
It's not uncommon for Pentecostals to be made fun of in the press. It's happened for years--even by other Christians who look down on or disagree with Pentecostal distinctives such as speaking in tongues. But a cartoon at washingtonpost.com by Pat Oliphant went too far and borders on blasphemy. Read more if you want to be shocked.
Also, below is a letter from David Tyree, the New York Giants football player who made the amazing "catch" at the Super Bowl. You'll want to read his letter about how to order his new book. I just read the book, and it is inspiring to see how God has worked in his life. It is also "a good read." I believe you'll enjoy it.
At the end of this e-newsletter is information from Robert Stearns on an important rally being held next Monday, Sept. 22, in New York in support of Israel. Interestingly, vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, a believer and advocate of Israel, will speak at the rally. E-mail copies to your friends who may be able to attend.
A segment of our society has made a big deal about Mitt Romney's religion being off-limits, as well as Barak Obama's connection to the Muslim faith through his father and stepfather. Why, then, isn't Sarah Palin's Pentecostal connection off-limits too?
As a journalist I know people want to know about the background of candidates—especially when they aren't widely known, as Palin wasn't when McCain announced his decision to make her his running mate on Aug. 29. Thank God for freedom of the press. It allows us to write about the gospel without censorship.
So this isn't about censorship. It's about poor taste. Thankfully the Washington Post didn't print the cartoon in its regular newspaper. It appeared only in the Sept. 9 online edition. Here is the cartoon. Decide for yourself what you think.
Check it out to see why the Washington Post decided to publish it.
I know the secular press doesn't worry about such things. But this is blasphemy, and it is an insult to anyone who believes in or exercises the New Testament gift of speaking in tongues. It also shows the ignorance of the cartoonist--Pentecostals don't stand in a pulpit and preach in tongues as he has Sarah Palin doing. To top it off, he portrays God the Father in an unflattering way and using profanity. I'm surprised there has been so little outcry about this.
The Washington Post ombudsman, Deborah Howell, said only 350 people objected. But to her credit she said the following in the print version of the Washington Post on Sunday:
"Speaking of overdoing it, a political cartoon by Pat Oliphant that appeared on washingtonpost.com Wednesday prompted complaints from about 350 readers who said he lampooned their faith. The cartoon showed Palin speaking in tongues, an aspect of worship in some Pentecostal churches, and then God telling St. Peter that he didn't understand what she was saying -- 'All I can hear is some dam' right-wing politician spouting gibberish.'
"Readers were right to complain; I will deal with political cartooning in another column. Political cartoons and comics aren't selected at washingtonpost.com the way they are for the Post in print; they are automatically posted."
Perhaps that policy needs to be revisited.
One of my contacts at the McCain headquarters wrote me this:
"This is ABSOLUTELY outrageous even if it only appeared online! One cannot speak ill of someone's Muslim faith or the liberal media and the left have a fit, but take on someone in the evangelical or Pentecostal persuasion and it is fair game with no taste needed. I think certain things are out of bounds campaign-wise, and the way this one was done is way out of line."
I've been bombarded with e-mails since this came out. One friend—an astute political observer--wrote me this:
"The Main Street Media manufactured a firestorm against Sarah Palin before the RNC Convention in Minneapolis, and thereby created the opportunity for her to hit a home run in her speech with a large part of the nation watching. This cartoon will provide an additional engine, thank you Pat Oliphant."

Someone else copied me on an e-mail he sent out urging people to let the Washington Post know how they feel. In case you want to do this, I include the pertinent information below, believing it to be correct. Remember, be kind in what you write. There is no law that says they can't offend us. But let them know it's not considered polite and that they are insulting the 20 million to 30 million Pentecostals and charismatics in this country.
If we don't speak up, then others will assume it's OK to blaspheme what we believe with no repercussions. If you write the Post, be sure to cut and paste your comments into the blog section at the end of this e-newsletter.

Be sure to support Israel at this rally next Monday in New York.
We are living in an hour when terrorists who become presidents of rogue states are welcomed at the UN, even as their anti-Semitic vitriol is broadcast around the world on the evening news. Christian support for Israel is not to be taken for granted, nor is it an absolute. The dividing line over Israel is being drawn today in the nations, and yes, even in the Bible-believing Church. Now is the time to stand up and be counted on the side of God's eternal covenant promises!
I am asking you to adjust your schedule and make whatever sacrifice that you can to be a voice for Israel at this critical hour.
We are calling on you to make your way to New York City this Monday morning, September 22, to join together with Jews and Christians from the tri-state region to declare support for Israel, and to protest the visit of Iran's president to the United Nations General Assembly. Due to Iran's nuclear ambitions and the threat to Israel, our friends in the Jewish community have planned this protest and they have reached out to us as Christians to add our voice to theirs.
I have just received information that vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, a believer and advocate of Israel, will speak at the rally. We will have signs for you to pick up on-site as a demonstration of support that will be seen by the leaders of the nations coming to the UN, and by the world as they watch on the news. Rarely do we have such a strategic opportunity to show the world that we believe in God's word, and are willing to place our time and our money on the line to be present and counted on the side of Israel!
Come pick up your signs at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 45th Street at 10:45 a.m., and then head over to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza (2nd Avenue and 47th Street) across from the United Nations for the rally which will begin at 11:45 a.m., rain or shine. We will see you soon!
Well, that's all for this week in the Strang Report. Remember to leave your comments below.
All the best,
Steve Strang

Dear Friend,

This year's Super Bowl was a day I will never forget. There will be many stories told of the behind-the-scenes events that led up to that historic game. God moved so suddenly and miraculously there that "David Tyree" has become a household name. And, because of a couple of plays, now people want to know my story.
More Than Just The Catch tells my story. It includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. When you finish it, you will know that its message is about more than a game. It is about a life changed and the One who changed it. God allowed me to be a part of what some people have called the greatest play in Super Bowl history to provide a platform so that He would get the glory. I believe that many lives will be touched by the truth of this.
My motive for sharing my life story is to encourage others to put their trust in God. I want people to know that Jesus is real. I pray that my testimony will release miracles to every person who reads it. I especially want to shout out this promise to the young people who think it is boring to serve God: miracles are never boring!
I also pray that my story will touch the lives of professional athletes who have been distracted and separated from the reality of what success is. When the cameras' flashing lights dim and go out, I cannot be a hero to the world and not be a hero to my children. Success in the eyes of men means nothing to me if I am not successful in the eyes of my wife. There is no great career in the spotlight without a great family life behind the scenes. True happiness extends past the winning touchdown or the greatest catch. Great moments like these mean nothing if there is no peace in your heart.
I pray that everyone who reads my story will get the message behind the miracle. Don't try to figure it out. God don't make sense—He makes miracles!
You can purchase a copy of More Than Just The Catch today everywhere fine Christian books are sold. Or, order online right now at the following online retailers. Buy a copy for yourself and another for everyone you know who needs to hear this essential message. Purchase now and help us drive up the rankings and produce a best seller!

Getting all indignant that your Christian faith is belittled... this is not a Biblical response. Sorry - your blustering is not only ridiculous, it's also against the grain of the Gospel message. What kind of Christian witness does this show to the world?

Steve: Please reread parts of the "Guardian System", a very good book published by Charisma some years ago, that describes the very detailed investigation necessary before a church accepts volunteers into child care and other ministries. It is clear to me that no such scrutiny was made of Ms. Palin before she was blindingly accepted and promoted by many in the church as the purported savior of the McCain campaign, the second coming of Deborah and/or Esther, and so on. Unfortunately, the manner in which she ran her various campaigns and offices in Alaska would get her fired from most companies, and certainly Strang Communications. It is not unscriptural to insist on competency and honesty.

Mr. Strang,
Thank you for your stand for truth. The cartoon shows the ignorance of people who do not read the Bible. It is of deep, regrettable concern that people do not have a fear of God.

"anonymous" feels that as Christians, we are not allowed to have an opinion or stand against what is wrong. He really should read the Bible. I feel sorry for the Washington Post. Thank you for standing for the truth! It is ridiculous that when people offend Muslims or any other religion or group people automatically protest against it and see it as prejudice; however, society wants to have it as normal when someone bashes the Christian faith.
And to the anonymous guy, this is not against the grain of the gospel message because Jesus refuted the Pharisees of His time.
It's time for Christians to stand and demand respect for our faith!

Good morning Editor of the Washington Post
I am aware that speaking in tongues is a strange phenomenon to non-believers, but just because it happens, should not be a reason to ridicule our faith and our experiences. If this happens to millions of believers, shouldn't Mr Pat Oliphant wonder what it is that makes it so special. And if God understands the thousands of languages that already exists on earth today, He sure can understand a few thousand new ones, after all He created the differences at the Tower of Babel, where He saw that if all people spoke the same languange they would be able to do a lot more than He wanted them to do at the time, but now is the time that is ripe for all people to a lot more and English is becoming a world language, but God still maintains a prayer language with His own people.
After all God does not need us to speak out loud, he hears our every thought, and that includes Mr Pat Oliphant's thoughts.
Please Mr Editor, if we do not ridicule others, don't ridicule what we hold sacred either.
In Christ's love

Subject: Oliphant's Cartoon in VERY poor taste
Dear Caroline:
I am writing to let you know that Pat Oliphant's cartoon in the Washington Post online version slamming Sarah Palin's pentecostal background is VERY OFFENSIVE to many of the 25 million plus Americans who have a similar faith. Almost 85% of the entire population of the United States consider themselves to be "Christian" or "Evangelical" and I would think that many of them would be insulted by this cartoon in the way it portrayed God cursing and the unfair treatment of a smart female Christian politician as being a ditz for her religious beliefs. I know it was a joke, but it was in VERY poor taste.
Imagine how the rest of America would feel if you took such a public shot at a muslim, atheist, mormon or new ager! Lucky for you, convervative Christians are a bit more forgiving. I doubt you would fare as well with the liberals.
I think a retraction, and a public apology to Mrs. Palin and the 225 Million Christian Americans who swung the vote in the last two elections is in order.
Thank you for your time.

The next thing you will hear is that Barack's campaign had something to do with this. It is about God and the disrepect to Him that is the issue here. It has nothing to do with Sarah Palin. I had never heard of the lady before and it is like she step out of the woodwork. God will deal with all of this. Mr strang when I subscribed to your report I did not know it was for endorsing people. The best thing for you to do is stay out of the arena. God help us all. People know what your knees are for. Wow, although I am not supporting the John McCain/Palin ticket for this election, I was certainly sadden by the response of the Washington Times. I certainly believe in the "pentecostal" message and I cannot believe that such heresy was allowed to be printed. Nevertheless, its the mainstream media, so anything they do must be ignored.

My prayer is that if you have any integrity, you will publicly apologize to her and your readers.

I wrote to the editor: I find the cartoon of Sarah Palin speaking in tongues upsetting, inaccurate, and just unbiblical. It says in the 10 commandments that we are not to take the Lords name in vain. How about His character? This cartoon takes his character and a gift he has given us in vain! I fear for and pity the person that created that cartoon. He really knew "not what he does". He has blasphemed the Bible and Sarah by mocking tongue speaking and blasphemed God himself with the words he portrays coming out of His mouth! From the Old testament to Proverbs and Psalms to the New Testament, he has gone against so much of how the Bible says we are to behave. I'm not worried so much about the effect on Sarah's campaign or the view that can be taken about the Bible from this cartoon. God is still in charge (and always will be) and what the devil meant for harm, God will use this for His good. We are to pray for those that offend us and walk in ignorance. So tell the cartoonist I forgive him and God will too if he asks. I pray that he/she open their Bible and realize how wrong they were and repent to God. God loves it when a Prodigal son comes Home with a broken heart. Please share this with the cartoonist. Jenn S

Here is my e-mail to the Washington Post:
I am writing in reference to the Sarah Palin political cartoon that recently appeared online. The cartoon portrayed her speaking in tongues publicly and "God" responding with profanity, saying that she was speaking gibberish.
This cartoon was done in extremely poor taste, and it offends the millions of people who are part of the Pentecostal/charismatic movements within Christianity. Certainly the media is going to have fun with those involved in the presidential race and use humor to demonstrate a certain point of view, but to ridicule a person's faith is completely uncalled for and inappropriate.
Frankly, I am surprised and dismayed that a publication of your caliber would stoop to such levels. As a pastor in the Assemblies of God, I am offended to see my faith caricatured in this manner.
Glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, is a very sacred experience and belief to millions of Christians. Not only is this experience lampooned in your illustration, but it is completely misrepresented. If you would like a clearer understanding of this doctrine so that you will be able to more accurately report on such matters, I will be happy to discuss our theology with you. Even better, I encourage you to contact our General Superintendent's office at the General Council of the Assemblies of God, Springfield, Missouri. Or you may conduct further research at our denomination's website: http://www.ag.org.
Finally, I encourage you to print an apology for presenting this cartoon and to refrain from derogatory portrayals of religion of any sort in the future.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Chad Payne

Dear sir or madam
I would suggest that an obviously deficient policy either needs to be changed, or a new policy instituted , immediately. Freedom of speech and expression is one thing, but blasphemy or near blasphemy of Christian beliefs is totally unacceptable. If this had been a slam against a Muslim belief or tradition, one can only imagine the impact it would of created. We will be praying that you will make the right and ethical decisions in this matter especially as they relate to policies and discussions with Pat Oliphant.

That cartoon offends every Bible believing Christian and most of all it offends God.

The word of the Lord says, Philippians 1:17 -"...I am set for the defence of the gospel..."
Philippians 1:7 - "...and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel,...
Acts 22:3 "...zealous toward God..."
Psalm 106:30 - "Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment..."
Numbers 25:11 - "Phinehas...was zealous for my sake among them..."
There is a famous saying that goes something like this - Evil flourishes when good men do nothing.
We can disagree with people by speaking the truth in love. We are commanded in God's word to warn the wicked (Ezekiel 3) - if we don't - their blood will be on our hands.
Our God is sovereign and the cartoon was disrespectful of God as the Most High. While it is true that all people do not believe in God, God's people have a duty to present Him, and to share His gospel.
It is not unbiblical to defend God and to express how he is demeaned.
As one of God's children, my position is that it would be an insult to my Father not to express displeasure when He is portrayed in such an abominable manner. He is God Almighty, the Supreme Judge of us all.
I go on record in defence of God because He is worthy of my zeal, and anger at how he was belittled in print.
This is righteous indignation at the disrespect shown to the God of gods who is greater than all.
I love those who did the cartoon, but hate the content of the creation. Jesus loves sinners, but hates the sins. In the word of God, Jesus expressed anger in the context of love. The word says in Ephesians 4:26, "Be ye angry and sin not:..."
Speaking in tongues is not gibberish. It is a holy heavenly language provided by God to be used for His glory in His Master plan to further His kingdom so that people can be informed to make a choice to choose heaven or hell.
It is my earnest belief that an apology is in order for the blatant disregard for the sanctity
of our Sovereign Lord.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to you concerning the highly offensive comic by Pat Oliphant on September 9, 2008.
This was a blatant attack against Christians and specifically Pentecostals. Since this was authorized and published by The Washington Post I am viewing this as a clear anti-Christian hate attack against our faith. It is a vulgar insult that speaks against the 30 million Pentecostal Christians in the United States and multiplied millions around the world. It is an inexcusable slander of our belief.
It is the right of your newspaper to support and promote whichever candidate you choose. The days of fair and equal coverage of political candidates by the media has long since ended. It is clear that in our day reports from media sources reach far beyond information and fall fully under the banner of promoting one candidate while attacking another. You have reached an all time low in this attempt to defame the character of Governor Palin by focusing such an attack against hers and mine and millions of others religious beliefs.
As a Pastor specifically a Pentecostal Pastor, I will double my efforts to support Gov. Palin. Yet you are so hypocritical! You will demine and malign my religious beliefs but how dare anyone do that to Sen. Obama! What would have happened if you had published a cartoon with him sitting in Jeremiah Wrights church cheering him cursing America?
My only solace in this attack against my faith is in the knowledge that your publication of such will result in Pentecostal Christians becoming more solidly behind a presidential team which boasts a candidate that is not ashamed of the display of her faith. You’re pointing out, though negatively, her faith will likely cause others of Christian faith to give full support to a Christian who lives her faith, governs through her faith, parents through her faith, campaigns through her faith, and will perhaps one day lead our nation through her faith.
I normally would request that that you would apologies but I am so outraged that I demand that you will publish a retraction and apology to Pentecostal Christians for such an offensive attack against our faith.
Sincerely,

Your cartoonist’s ridicule just exhibits his ignorance of the biblical spiritual experience of speaking in a heavenly language—an experience shared by almost a billion (with a “b”) people and an experience described by the two most prolific New Testament writers, i. e., Luke and Paul. Pentecostals are now the largest segment of protestant Christianity in the world. When combined with charismatic Catholics, they compose the largest segment of Christendom, period.
The problem with the cartoonist is that he is just too insular. A paper such as the Washington place should not give place to provincialism. There is a wider world beyond.

I am Russian and in Russia there is no real free press, a few years ago there was only one major media organization that did not agree with the government and now they are shut down,so all the news is controlled. Now I see the same thing in America from a different perspective. The vast majority of the media is religiously liberal maybe even over 90%. One of the only major media outlets that I know that shows the full perspective without major spin is Fox News. Thank God for freedom of speech but in the name of freedom of speech liberals in the media and entertainment and other areas of life have been able to say and do the most crazy and absurd things. And at the same time slowly but systematical silencing conservative voices even with the law. I can go into many examples and details here but that is not my purpose My purpose is to encourage Christians to pray for Sarah Palin whom I believe God is raising up as an Esther to help end the Holocaust of Abortion. We can as a nation get the President and Vice President that God wants or those we those we deserve. Pray that we do not get the leaders that we may deserve like the Israelites got many time in the Bible when they sinned. The attacks against Palin will not stop but grow, but we as Christians can raise up a prayer covering in the Blood of Jesus that is greater than any waepon of the enemy. Below are various prophetic words that we need to pray and stand for. Also Christians make a commitment to make praying for our govermental leaders and Sarah Palin and her family a real part of your life, something that has been a weakness in my life but now I am awakend by this revelation like never before.

Christians here are some prophetic words that you can judge and pray over God bless.
I have a more positive view of McCain because of prophecies I have heard before one of which is that the new President will come into the White House an unbeliever but before the end of his term he will be a Spirit-filled believer. Anther prophecy is that the Vice President will be second to non and this prophet also prophesied way back that Hillary would not be President. And as far as I know McCain has never called himself a Christian. My biggest reason is that he has had a real pro-life voting record which is more important than words.

To my esteemed brother Mr. Strang,
I cannot understand the fuss that you are trying to whip up with this POST's cartoon. Look, we live in a highly pluralistic society and we should respect each other's views. I assume the cartoonist doesn't know God as we know HIM so what do we expect? Your ranting is a classic case of hypocrisy. You will be credible if you raised the same fuss (at least a lip service)when some magazines "lampooned" Obama and his alleged Islamic ties. C'mon please be real! We should be willing to receive what we are willing to dish out. If the Post lampooned Obama would you be that excited to sy to the Post, "what ar you doing?" or will you be caught silently smiling. The evangelical Republicans have been lampooning Obama for the longest time - and now that the roost is coming home, we scream blasphemy!! For all you know, God is laughing this thing out as childish and naive! Give me a break guys - you make me vomit!
But the more important point is to ask: Why are the Post and media so free to do this? What have we evangelicals done to deserve such "blaspheming" that these "pagans"have lost their respect for us? Well, with Re. Haggard and now, Rev. Bentley not so-pleasant antics, do you think the philistines in media would pass up this chance to belittle our faith?

Confusion and Deception Broken
The level of confusion and deception I have seen over America in the last two years both in the Church and without has been unlike anything I have ever witnessed. The level of it, especially in the Body of Christ, has truly been shocking to me. The list of areas in which it has manifested is broad: presidential candidate endorsements and prophecies, doctrinal error, relational breakups, disagreements over what is true and false revival, etc.
Add to this list a general weariness, complacency (one well-known leader told me he doesn't think it matters anymore who is elected president - so much for shifting the Supreme Court!), disillusionment, disorientation, etc. - and it all adds up to incredible confusion and deception. I believe it is all linked to our war in Iraq, which is ancient Babylon. Babylon means "confusion." It was not difficult for us to defeat Iraq's physical army, but the principality - the spirit of Babylon - has been another story altogether.
Just a couple of weeks ago, however, I heard the Holy Spirit say very clearly to me, "I'm about to unravel the cords of confusion." When I heard this I had the sense that it would begin in September.
In 2 Chronicles 20, God used Israel's worship to "ambush" their enemies. The result was that these enemies destroyed one another! Expect the confusion to break off of the Church this fall and for God's enemies to be ambushed. http://elijahlist.com/words/display_word/6746
The November Elections
To say it has been troubling to listen to prominent Christian leaders endorse certain candidates and/or prophesy that it is God's will for those candidates to be president would be an understatement. Make no mistake about it, the turning of the Supreme Court and reversing the flow of death and anti-God laws that have flowed out of it is still God's number one governmental agenda for America.
To elect a pro-abortion candidate that would appoint pro-abortion judges would be disastrous and could set us back 50 years. It doesn't matter who prophesies or states otherwise - don't be deceived by this. It is NOT God's will for us to have a liberal, pro-abortion president!
I listened to one of the presidential candidates make a speech four years ago and heard one of the strongest abilities for deceiving and moving the masses that I've ever witnessed. The strength of this "gift" was very scary. I knew then he would be a candidate for president in '08. The good news is that the deception surrounding him will begin to break in September and the momentum of the elections will be decided at that time - if the Church prays. Please pray diligently and don't be taken in by charisma and empty promises of change. http://elijahlist.com/words/display_word/6746

Here is my letter:
To the Washington Post,
I just saw Oliphant’s cartoon which appeared in your online version of the Post. I am astounded. The cartoon displays a great deal of ignorance of who Pentecostals are. We are not some lunatic fringe. We do not speak gibberish from our pulpits. We are part of the Christian church worldwide, and while some of what we believe may seem strange, that is not the point. Would you dare to print something so misleading and rude about New Agers or Muslims, or Buddists?
For what it is worth, I have not yet decided who will receive my vote. This is not about politics nor the political views of the candidates. It is about ignorance and disrespect.
This cartoon is bigoted and insulting to the 20 million to 30 million Pentecostals and charismatics in this country. Frankly, it is blasphemous and could well be insulting to people of faith from other non-Pentecostal traditions.
Please revisit your policy about what is acceptable for publication, online or in print media.

And of course Bob Jones. Blessings!!!
Bob and Bonnie Jones:
"New Apostolic Government in Place by 2012"
A New Apostolic Government by 2012
In the last 30 years we've seen a restoration of the prophetic - true prophets have been restored to the Church. But now we are about to see a restoration of the apostolic - true apostles are arising. The prophets bring the revelation and the apostles bring the application.
These apostles will be men and women like Joshua - leaders that bring the rest into the Promised Land. These apostles will not be appointed by man, but by God. In fact, many of them will look extremely different from what we would call "apostolic." This new breed of apostolic order will not fear losing their reputation nor be concerned about what the newspapers are saying, but rather, they will speak what the real news is. The secular newspapers won't judge the Church; it will be the other way around.
You can't persecute the anointing and the glory of God or you'll miss it. These apostles will speak to nations and cause a shift in the natural and the spiritual. Revival will break out and new regions will be changed as the Lord establishes new governmental order. This is not a man thing…this is a God thing!
We will see an entirely new apostolic government in place by 2012. At this time, we will see the Church being put together and growing into a habitation for the Spirit of God: "...in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit" (Ephesians 2:21-22).
The Coming Election and the Angel Named Union
Right now it is extremely important to pray for the coming election. The winds of change are blowing. We must pray for this Godly Vice President. September is the month that will make the difference - this is the month it begins. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, starts the night of September 29th.
Right now God is harvesting harvesters for the great harvest. By 2012 we will see a genuine apostolic government in place. From there we will see others come alongside and do what they are called to do.
We are in the middle of one of the greatest changes in history. These next eight years will be full of joy if the Church steps into authority and God's righteous people are elected. It's time to begin to bless instead of curse. The mind of Christ will be released to true followers with a fresh vision, new anointing, and plenty of provision.
We are going to see Roe vs. Wade overturned. It's time to bless the United States and not curse her. Bob Jones heard Kate Smith singing God Bless America. This is the United States of America. We are united by diversity, and the angel over this nation is named "Union" - we are united by diversity and strengthened by union.

O and here is the info on Hillary Clinton and also the New VP
Kim Clement
From Portland, OR January 19, 2008- Portland, OR
Now I tell you a mystery again, there is a change, in the atmosphere, in the political arena. For God said the enemy has chosen his one and I have chosen. This is not a day where men can vote, this is a day when God instates men into the Oval Office. There shall be a Vice President that shall be second to none, that shall take over the land. http://www.kimclement.com/
Kim Clement
January 14, 2006- Orlando, FL
And some of you said, when the Spirit said Hillary Clinton , some of you shouted out "yes". God said, I have already dealt with her heart, not to be President of this Nation but to be president in a Christian world. She will have a testimony second to none and will eventually come out with it and make declaration that Christ Jesus saved her marriage, saved her child, and saved her life. And when this happens there will be a shaking in the Democratic Party so powerful. They will say, what choice do we have? http://www.kimclement.com/

Dear Washington Post,
Thank you for publishing the cartoon in question. I hope you will print many more just like it. These jabbering, babbling, tambourine swinging charismatics don't know what to do when their faith is tested. They crumble and cry like babies! This shows the strength of their faith... non-existent, unless everyone else agrees 100% with them.
They can't take it, although they'd LOVE to see other faiths ridiculed. Cartoons like this one bring out the loonies in droves! "It's not fair!" "It's not right!" "We're victims here!" "Whaaaaaaaa!!!"
Thanks again for making the crackpots holler!

Mr. Strang,
It is very disappointing to see how you are turning Charisma into a magazine of gospel gossip. I was delighted a few years ago to see such a well put together magazine devoted to the gospel and the varied information on churches, faiths, and what the pastors were doing. Now, all I see is gossip and hate-mongering. We are necessarily different and should be seeking to understand each other. Instead we jump on the band wagon and beat'em down along with the ungodly. I will pray and pray fervently that our Lord will manifest His glory and set things right in this election whoever His choice is. It is His choice not man's. When the wrong man is in office, evil reigns. Not my words but scriptural words. I praise God for all the candidates, and their families. We should all (Christians) have a big helping of righteous indignation at the inconsistencies in the media and the double-mindedness of what's considered unamerican. Case and point Palin, a woman, the bread winner and her husband staying home with the children yet the extreme ugly comments made in cartoons about Michelle Obama who left high powered positions to be a wife, a mother, and serve her community. It's time to get beyond what we think and think about what God says. He is the final authority. Any power that man has is from Him and He will have the last say. Mr. Strang your magazine is not a political one to get your personal agenda forth. There are consequences to not being a good steward over what He has given you. The heart of God is what we need to seek and obey his commands. Abortion is not the only issue this country is facing. It is a critical one but by no means the only one. What about oil prices, safety in america? We are now living with the enemy. The way religion is being systematically removed from the foundations of our nation is just as critical. Jobs are being sent overseas and customer service is a thing of the past. The elderly are losing their pensions, can't get jobs, healthcare is a joke. Social Security is running out of money. We need to join together, put differences aside and seek to take our country back. We are handing it over others by our lack of steadfastly standing with the Gospel and being inwilling to waver in our belief and willingness to be outspoken about anyplace, anytime, anywhere.

Dear Editor,
I along with about 30 million of my fellow Pentecostal and Charismatic believers find the "cartoon" (I thought cartoons were suppose to be funny, and the essence of humor is surprise with out threat) offensive to our faith and our God! Why is it that we don't see "cartoons" in the liberal media, lampooning Muslims, Hindus, the left wing? But Christians of all persuasions seem to be fair game! It's time to re-think your open posting policy on your website.
An apology might be a good thing with around 30 million or more of the public.

To whom ever this may concern:
I am an evangelical CHRISTIAN who find that picture in the Washington Post offensive to my soul. I know humor; I use sarchasm quite a bit myself, but mocking the works of the Holy Spirit is more than playing with fire. May God have mercy on you. I will pray that the very Christians you now mock be the ones to extend their hand to you and bring you to the feet of the cross, where none of us are worthy. We Christians love our Lord and Saviour and, as is said in the Left Behind series, "in the end, we win". God bless you all.

The cartoon you published showing Sarah Palin, John McCain, and "God" was very offensive. The God of the Christian bible does not use profanity. I bet you wouldn't publish the same thing about some moslem and degrading Alah. That you would only attack people that are kind and good people is really low. What have you done to bless someone today?

I am referring to your Sarah Palin cartoon that you recently published on line.
What have you become as a newspaper when you print stuff like this - showing how much poor taste and insults you can publish? Do you call this a political satire? No it looks like it its all about taking snide, cheap shots, smirking about speaking in tongues which is something you obviously know very little to nothing about.
What it is about the press being so ignorant about religion especially Christianity that you would insult and malign another person's belief in God? Do you understand how offensive this is to me because you have taken a cheap shot at a fellow Christian, myself and 20 million to 30 million Pentecostals and charismatics in this country and other born again Christians who should be free to worship in a way that is important to us.
Whatever happened to respect? Beyond offending a group of Christians, you have insulted a holy and almighty God as a person who used profanity. I pray you see the error in your thinking. The God who lovingly created the world and all that is in it could not by His very nature be what you portray. This is highly offensive to me.
It's not OK to blaspheme what we believe with no repercussions. You should retract what you printed. You owe both Sarah Palin and God an apology.

While you have a right in this country to say anything you like and offend large numbers of people, it doesn't mean you should. Along with rights come responsibitlies. Had they all read your online edition on this date then you would have been the proud offender of 30 million Pentecostal style Christians, and that's just the ones in the United States. Luckily most of them don't waste their time reading your offensive and hard-left- leaning rag. The subject cartoon was way over the top and not even accurate and is even considerd blasphemous by most Pentecostals and even non-Pentecostal Christians and probably even many of other religious persuasions or of no religion at all. Offending good people's deeply held religious views that don't harm others and in fact provide a tremendous spiritual benefit to millions is not only crass and low, it is stupid for a for-profit entity in the year 2008.

You asked us to supply our comments to the Post and I have done so below. Thank you for standing up for truth as was stated before me.
I am writing in reference to the "political" cartoon that was posted online in your newspaper regarding the beliefs of charismatic/pentecostal Christians.
Pat Oliphant did indeed show her ignorance of our beliefs and how we carry them out. She also wrote that our God would act in such a manner as any common unloving person would. God is far from common and He is far from unloving. He is Almighty God and He is Love. And anyone that has searched for Him with their whole heart knows this. Sarah Palin's God loves His people and He loves all people that hate Him -with equal love for all. Jesus Christ loved all of us when we hated Him and took all of our sins on Himself-He knowing no sin and becoming sin for us on the cross so that all could be forgiven by God (whether they want or ask for forgiveness,or not). Dying to save someone is the ultimate act of love. Since God, the Father, forgave Pat and the editors of Washington Post over 2,000 years ago, who am I to hold unforgiveness towards them. I choose to forgive Pat Oliphant and the Washington Post for being ignorant and hateful. I feel sorry for her. And I will pray for her and the people that so freely speak ignorance of something they no nothing about.
Since we still have freedom of press which I thank God for so that people can hear about Jesus' love, I choose to tell your paper that this is very hateful and if it had been directed towards a Muslim, I fear the wrath of words you would have received.
Most Sincerely,
Lianna F.

GOD IS VICTOR
I am heartened to see all of the comments posted publicly to give our God the glory and respect that He is so worthy to receive. Pointedly, this comment is to address the comment posted on September 18, 2008 at 9:24 p.m. by Anonymous.
First, it is important that you know that I love you, and appreciate that you are indeed a person of value who God most certainly loves. As a Christian, my primary aim needs to be love. A component of true love is to speak God’s truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). We are mandated by God to warn the wicked (Ezekiel 3). Our Lord holds us accountable for how we do that. He reminds us that “such were some of you.” Were it not for His mercy….
That said, I respond, in particular, to some of your comments. You erroneously stated that they “don’t know what to do when their faith is tested.” True Christians do know what to do. We believe, and adhere to what the word of God commands. His word says, “…this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. (I John 5:4). You stated that “we crumble and cry like babies.” The word of God states, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.” (Romans 8:37).
Further, the word states, “…and none shall make them afraid. (Zephaniah 3:13). You stated that we say that “we’re victims.” That is not truth. God’s word says, “…and them that had gotten the victory over the beast,…” (Revelation 15:2), and again His word states, “…we are more than conquerors…, (Romans 8:37).
Every statement that you made about true Christians is false. The word of God proves the truth of what He states. God is pure truth, and the Father of it. His word states, “…the devil,…is a liar, and the father of it. (John 8:44)
From the beginning of time to date, every enemy of God has failed. Goliath boastfully proclaimed how he would defeat David. David slew Goliath – with Goliath’s sword, mind you. Pharaoh believed that he ruled. God overthrew him, and his army in the Red sea while God’s people walked over on dry ground through the same Red sea. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal. God provided the proof that only He is God. The prophets called on their god Baal for victory. Elijah called on his God for victory. The God of Elijah conquered. God’s word is replete with true accounts of brave, steadfast, faithful, and zealous people of God. Certainly, we have our flaws – still God can powerfully manifest through those who strive earnestly to obey Him.
You stated that we “love to see other faith’s ridiculed.” That too is false. True worshippers of God love everyone – as God does. God and His people desire that the unrighteous seek the Lord while He may be found and call upon Him while He is near. (Isaiah 55:16). We are commissioned by God to share His love, joy, peace, and message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Finally, you expressed glee for “making the crackpots holler.” God’s word says, “…unbelieving,…all liars,…shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8). It is a certainty that those who have allegiance to evil will holler eternally. At that position, the hollering will find no remedy or relief. I can assure you that none of the hollering will be done by true Christians!
You made such “strong” declarations in your comments here - interesting that you would than post as “Anonymous.” My name is Sandra Renee Hicks, redeemed of the Lord God Almighty. I go on record as a zealous defender of the Most High, the Father of the righteous. You are lovingly invited to join us!
Please heed this warning about the unrighteous who will go to hell if they fail to become performers of God’s word. We love you. Will you obey God? - Or have we become your enemies because we tell you the truth? (Galatians 4:16). Whether you elect to remain an enemy, God loves you, regardless. But the choice is yours – heaven or hell?
The Devil ain’t going to win!!!

To the Editor:I am writing this in protest to the on-line cartoon put out by the Washington Post. I was very disturbed and appalled on the content. I too grew up the way Sarah did and am very proud of my upbringing. True believers are not crazy or idiots, we just love God and want to follow his word. To be a true believer in the Bible cover to cover is what our country and it's founders stood for. You cannot believe in the one true God and his son Jesus, and not believe the whole Bible. Well, I just wanted to let you know that I am not angry at the person who wrote this, because that is what is wrong with how we as Pentecostals are portrayed hateful, angry and crazy. We just want people to know that we love our God, which means we love this country that he has allowed to be established and are praying for all, especially those who are in leadership (Democrat or Republican) and want the same respect as any other religion. On that note, my so called religion is really just a simple relationship with the one who created it all in the first place. Thank you and God Bless you,Angie McVicker

Hello,
I am writing today to express my disgust and disappointment in your choice to post the Sept 9th Pat Oliphant cartoon ridiculing Sarah Palin's faith, and that of many in our nation. Why do you think my Christian and even evangelical/charismatic/Pentecostal faith is fair game, when other faiths or belief structures are protected, if not propped up?
I know you certainly have the "right" to do it, but I would ask that you show more deference or taste in the future. You are eroding things that actually make us stronger - our right to believe, or not, and to be respected, regardless.
Thanks,

Dear Editor,
I am disheartened at the publishing of the political cartoon, mocking Palin speaking in tongues. Pentecostals are not singled out as speaking in tongues as an act of prayer or worship. It has crossed all denominational lines as I myself am Roman Catholic. It is just sad to see that we have lost a certain respect in this day and age as regards to religion, especially Christianity.

The cartoon was despictable, but I also have a questions about Palin's Christainity. I would like to know why Sarah Palin ( Christian) is running on a ticket as running mate to someone who earns his living selling "Beer" to most of the nation? Or do we have selective sins? Also, why did she change churches?

Greetings -
I do not know Stephen Strang personally, but am compelled to comment on some of the criticism of him and "Charisma" magazine.
There is a witness in my spirit that Mr. Strang is a true man of God. I do not believe that he intentionally aims to violate the dictates of the word of God. The project that he undertakes to develop and produce a magazine is no easy task. He faces persecution both outside and inside the church factions. Often, even when we do our best, we falter. God knows Mr. Strang's heart, and I believe that God is aware that his mission is one with many challenges. Sometimes those challenges can seem insurmountable.
God helps him but Mr. Strang is a vessel of honor who has a tremendous responsiblity. Granted, Mr. Strang does not always get things right - who does? God is our source. Let us pray that we will all attain greater wisdom from the only Wise God. And be mindful that we are to bear one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2).
I honor Mr. Strang and his dedicated staff for their writing/publishing accomplishments. Charisma is one of a limited supply of magazine material geared to the Christian community. No, it is not perfection - but God's word is... I consider Charisma a supplement to the powerful word of God. It is not a panacea....
Certainly, when we recognize errors in Christian content, we should lovingly address it. That is our Christian responsibility. However, we need to stay mindful of how we do it. What are our motives? Are we being self-rightous or unnecessarily critical? God weighs all of that, and judges us accordingly.
May God help us all!

Washington Post Editor:
There seems to be an all out war against Sarah Palin, with very intrusive, insulting, and caustic questioning as well as beyond the pale, tasteless cartooning. A segment of our society has made a big deal about Mitt Romney's religion being off-limits, as well as Barak Obama's connection to the Muslim religion through his father and stepfather. Why, then, isn't Sarah Palin's faith connection off-limits too?
Speak ill of someone's Muslim religion or the liberal media and the left have a conniption fit, but take on someone in the evangelical or Pentecostal faith and it is open season with no truth, tact, or taste required.
Why is it OK to invade Sarah Palin with a whole lot of questions about her private life and make demands about she stands on abortion, same sex marriage and stem cell research and and not hold accountable and make the same demands of Obama and Biden?
It is just plain media hypocrisy and bias, that's what! I am very upset and angry that there is a definite premeditated double standard between the "great, mighty, holy, can do nothing wrong, savior of the country, " Obama, and the treatment John McCain and Sarah Pailin are receiving for daring to run against him.
For REAL CHANGE, our country needs Media Outlets to report accurate, truthful and unbiased news, instead of trying to create witchhunts and supporting certain agendas.
You stated that the online version of your publication is not subject to the same acceptance rules as the printed version. This policy must changed, and your online service held accountable to the same rules you would apply to submission to the printed version, if you want to continue to get support and subscriptions from millions of faith based US citizens.
Respectfully,
a Very concerned citizen,

This comment is addressed to Joshua who posted on 9/18/08 at 8:39 p.m.
You made some meaningful points....
In particular, the comment about why some in the secular community have such disrepect for Christians. You are on point that a lot of that is our fault because much of Christian conduct does not represent God's ways.
There is so much lack of love that is prevalent in the body of Christ.
Love is mentioned as first in the listing of the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5:22. How often is that love manifested through us - along with the other vital fruits of God's spirit?
There is a yearning for blessing, prosperity, and power from God. Yet there is a dearth of us blessing God with our obedience and reverent fear of Him. God will not entrust His power to non-loving, self-righteous, and continually rebellious people. Gold abibeth faithful - he cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13). Further His word says,"If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: (Psalm 66:18).
Would you be surprised at how many professing Christians harbor resentment, bitterness and unforgiveness? Those attitudes prevent God from flowing in such vessels of dishonor. God will not justify the wicked nor will He aquit the guilty. That includes the wicked and guilty "Christians" for He is no respecter of persons. His word says, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." And the wages of sin is death!
I do not know how many times I have heard spiritual leaders teach and preach on prosperity, blessings, and victories. The messages are preached but the demonstration of love is so often not evident in their conduct. So, Joshua, you are right - we need to live of God's word. If we don't, we are unprofitable and not fit for the Master's use.

Yet another propagandic attack to Bible believing Christians from your unbiased friends at the Washington Post. You would never portray a Muslim in a demeaning cartoon for fear of retribution yet you freely and viciously attack not Sara Palin, but the God of the Bible Himself, showing him cursing and demeaning the gift of tongues. It's called blasphemy folks. You need to come out of your liberal world long enough to realize Christians are not going quietly away. Thank you Pat Oliphant for reminding me again just why we need to be outspoken in media and serving in our public offices lest you believe your sophmoric tactics have somehow embarrased us or weakened our hand of influence. We are not ashamed of the Jesus of the Bible nor of the Bible beliefs that our great nation was founded upon.

P.S. To the one stating Christians are unbiblical in responding with indignance. Read your Bible. Jesus called Pharisees "a brood of vipers", Herod a "fox", and he threw over a table at the temple. Jude 3 tells us to "earnestly contend for the faith". What he did not do was continue in vain and foolish arguments.

This is my email to the Washington Post:
Just this morning, I happened to come across the distasteful cartoon of Sarah Palin that was published online September 9th. I am so saddened to see Christians portrayed in such a bad light. Please reverse this irreverent trend in the media by saying something positive about Christians. Sarah Palin is proof positive that Christians are often very strong and focused contributorsto society. As a Christian businesswoman and mother of five, I raised my children to be intelligent, informed and productive American citizens. I believe Sarah is an absolute answer to prayer for America and will be a great leader, whether the McCain-Palin team wins the upcoming election or not. Her husband is obviously equally balanced, a great businessman, husband and father. Why is everyone so intent on destroying this beautiful family? As the media continues to show her in a bad light, remember that the rest of the world is watching. I believe this kind of unfair treatment against evangelical Christians must be stopped. The media is leading by example. With your position as a well known media outlet comes great accountability. Please take the high road and call for a truce.
Regardless of your political leaning, there is no doubt that the attack on Sarah Palin is uncalled for and unkind. Please pray for her peace, protection and wisdom.

Steve,
Thank you for enlightening those of us who do not subscribe to the Washington Post (I most likely NEVER will). There are people with a hefty price on their head for creating/publishing defamatory remarks against the Koran, yet Christians continue to turn the other cheek.
I wonder, though...in the early 40's the Jews in Germany slowly lost privileges and property. They quietly acquiesced thinking/assuming that if they cooperated the discrimination would level off.
Are Christians doing the same thing? No prayer in school...even a silent one; Boy Scouts can't meet on school grounds because the word "God" is in their motto; Christmas Carols are not learned by young children in public schools...even though they are part of our historical culture; in fact, it's not even Christmas/Easter break...it's winter & spring; some schools do not pledge to the flag daily; some states no longer have you put your hand on the Bible to be sworn in in court; high school and college history and political science books have been rewritten and purged of our religious history; some of our coins no longer have our motto; on and on and on. How much should we/ will we continue to accept before we have had enough?
Why is it that if one child is a Jehovah Witness in a class, Santa can't come to the classroom because the child would be discriminated against. HOWEVER, if one child in the class' parents believe in Creationism, they are dismissed as morons and evolution is taught as FACT anyway?????
The U.S. Constitution guarantees us Freedom OF Religion NOT Freedom FROM Religion!!

You know what? As a Christian, I see that on the surface this cartoon does make fun of speaking in tongues. But, what if there is a kernel of truth to it? What if God is (obviously not cursing) but saying, I do not hear some of what these so-called Christians are saying/praying because their hearts are not right? There is an abject depth of (conservative/evangelical) double standard going on some christian circles that I am embarrassed to see in action. And I frankly pray that we do not end up incurring the wrath of God in the process. There are many verses that tell us that God wants us to rend our hearts, not our garments (outward form of religiousity), that He sees the heart and so we should not be deceived because God is not mocked.
The hijack of the religious right of political issues could very well be bordering on mocking God. The whole focus is on cultural wedge issues which DO have spiritual significance, but ignore many other problems which are just as important to God. There are 10 commandments, not 1 (thou shall not kill) but many evangelicals want to hang their hats on the abortion issue at the expense of all else.
The same mistake was made with George Bush (gay marriage/abortion and the fact that he was a birn again christian) and now here we are, withour country struggling in every way.
Sure, God can use a donkey, or a pitbull, but only for very short concentrated periods of time. What He really needs are a combination of brains that are accustomed to critical thinking, leaders with more than a passing familiarity with other countries and world views, etc as well as a mind and heart that is teachable in the Christian sense in order for anyone to be successfully led to govern a country like the US for 4 or 8years. SORRY, SARAH SIMPLY DOES NOT HAVE THE COMBINATION NEEDED AND NEITHER GW BUSH.

It sad to see how this nation has turned it's face against God, upon whom this nation was founded on. I pray for this man who drew/wrote this blasphemous cartoon, because he knows NOT what he's doing. We cannot sit and judge one another, because in the end God Himself will be the ultimate judge. But, it won't stop me from living my life as God has called me to, one that is pure and holy before Him...and I will continue to pray for our future president and vice president (God willing McCain & Palin); people who still believe in family principles and morals, and living up to the mistakes that life has set before them.

Dear Editor,
As I have become older, I have realized that many in our nation are incapable of hearing what someone else has to say if that person's opinions or beliefs are different from our own. We pride ourselves in being mature, but in reality, we are quite immature. It is only a mature, well-grounded individual who is capable of listening to, and not poking fun at, someone's differing opinions or beliefs. We may not agree after listening, but let's use some tact.
I am sorry that Mr. Oliphant, based on what he has stated about himself in the Sarah Palin cartoon, is one of those who is incapable of listening to and hearing the opinions and beliefs of another. Let me be clear: in his cartoon, Mr. Oliphant has spoken more loudly about himself and your establishment than he has abour Governor Palin. And please understand, if his cartoon had made fun of Senator Obama, he would be showing himself to be just as incapable of hearing and listening.
Americans are not as ignorant as you and Mr. Oliphant seem to think. We are quite capable of making our own decisions based on the facts and truth of a matter. So, would you do us the honor of simply providing the facts, without the commentary or the slant, so that we wise ones can make up our own minds? When you do write an opinion, please state it simply, without all the drama and fanfare. We can and will do the rest. We do not need you to think for us.

HERE IS THE WASHINGTON POST EXECUTIVE EDITOR'S LAME RESPONSE TO MY COMPLAINT EMAIL: Keith Luker keithluker@earthlink.net
Response (Customer Care) - 09/19/2008 09:02 AM
Dear Reader,
Pat Oliphant is a syndicated editorial cartoonist carried on many news sites across the country. It is the nature of an editorial cartoonist to be provocative and offer up unique -- and often controversial -- viewpoints on the issues of the day. I have always opted for the approach that we should not limit the cartoonist's freedom of speech. We prefer to present the cartoon and allow you, the reader, to make the choice on whether to read it or not, and to express your own freedom of speech if you're bothered or offended by it.
Thanks,

To the WP Editor,
As a Public figure in Fresno, Ca. I would be criticized and in danger of being set down in my Community positions if I dare speak against Islam, or the Gay / Lesbian Agenda, or any Ethnicity or Creed. The outcry against past cartoons teasing Islam bordered on causing riots, and was even condemned publicly by non-Muslims. Similar uprising happens on our local radio talk-shows if any publicly known figure is found guilty in the public eye of gay-bashing or of any tasteless racial comments. We hear politicians and other public figures apologizing to save face regularly, after a comment as simple as “you people”, or “those people” in reference to some particular race or people group.
However, I can lampoon Evangelical Christianity without jeopardizing my popularity and receive little back-lash with the exception of a few letters from the most politically connected or socially involved in the Christian community.
Why the double standard. Hate speech, Slander, and insults about race, religion, sexual orientation, creed, family history, etc. are bad no matter who is being slandered.
Please take the high road here and in the future protect the dignity of all your readers and constituents, and not just the most maligned or select few.
Thanks you for your time and attention.

`As a Pentecostal of course I am offended by the cartoon. As I was offended by the Focus on the Family co-sponsoring the cartoon showing Senator Obama portrayed as Aunt Jemima-and the New Yorker portraying he and his wife as extreme Muslims. Of course, Mr Strang has no comment on those parodies.Christians, GROW UP! our fellow sisters and brothers are being tortured, and martyred in China, Africa and throughout the world because of their faith and love of the Lord, and you are wasting time whining about a cartoon! Charisma magaizine is turning into a parody itself and I for one am grieved at the anointing that she once showed has turned into a Republican advertisement. I have subscribed to Charisma for over 10 years and as soon as my subscription ends in April 09, I have to drop them. What a disappointment Charisma has become and how the mighty have fallen!

From: Dr. Sheldon Baker
To: Washington Post
I represent a large number of Christian people in religious organizations I belong to and in the Christian Media. Your decision to mock their faith is in poor taste and leaves me in shock!
First of all the cartoonist has no knowledge of the thing he mocks. People do not preach in tongues, it is a practice of prayer.
Secondly, God Almighty doesn't need a telephone to listen to his people praying or any one else.
Third, God doesn't cuss and He isn't out of touch with anything happening on this planet, but is omnipresent, knowing the hairs on the head of every human being, according to not only the Bible but the Koran and other religious books describing him. So you have actually mocked God. He says in the Bible that he will not be mocked so that seems foolish.
Fourth, you indicate that the Father Figure of God in the Trinity is irritated with the tongues of a Christian. The Bible in the books of Romans and Jude and Corinthians and Acts, show that tongues is an expression of prayer generated by GOD through the person who yields to the extra empowerment of that supernatural assistance of the Holy Spirit, to pray in worship or speak in prophetic utterances. It is not for the general public but used in exact guidelines within the church, that the apostles set forth in the epistles for believer's private meetings. The original public incidents on the day of Pentecost, were a sign and wonder to unbelievers because there was accurate interpretation that could be understood in their own language and that is why they considered it a miracle of God's power. Confusion and irritation were not the result in earth or heaven as you have indicated in the cartoon showing that neither McCain or God understand the utterance.
- You have instead indicated in the ridiculous cartoon that speaking in tongues leaves God confused and others because it has no meaning and is only giberish.
- You have also indicated that McCain has no prayer life and can not hear in his heart anything of inspiration from God and that he doesn't believe his own prayers are heard.
- You have insulted millions of Christians, over 600 million Pentecostal or Charismatic worldwide. This will circulate on the internet and reach many of them.
- You have insulted McCain and Palin personally.
- You have insulted God who doesn't need a puny telephone to listen or a telescope to see the cartoon on the earth He created with higher design and intelligence than man's.
- You have shown unbelievable ignorance in your lack of understanding or responsible journalism skills to research this matter before publishing it.
I believe you would be very wise to publicly print an apology to everyone that you have offended if you expect them to value your cartoons or read your paper.

For Dr. Sheldon Baker, who posted here recently, and for many, many of the rest of you...
Please. Think. The Washington Post is not your enemy. AND they love this controversy! Know why? Because MORE PEOPLE WILL READ THEIR PAPER WHEN THERE IS A FUSS MADE LIKE THIS! Hey, do you remember the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ"??? It would have been poorly attended and disappeared quietly had the "religious protesters" not showed up everywhere to try to send a message. Since they did, BIG NEWS was made about it and many people went to see it "just to see what all the fuss was about." Such protests do EXACTLY the opposite of their intent. If we ignore them, they'll stop printing this stuff. If we raise the roof about it, EVERYbody will watch them carefully! THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT! Don't you all know how delighted they must be to receive all these protest messages??? You can count on seeing more cartoons, editorials, stories, etc. appearing JUST BECAUSE it will stir people up!
I don't agree with the cartoon, but I also don't agree with MANY things we see in the papers, TV, and internet. As angry and revolted as I may be, I'm going to simply ignore it all. If somebody asks me what I think, I'll gladly tell them. But preaching a sermon to the Washington Post editors just makes them giggle!
PLEASE, fellow Christians! Look at what you're doing!

Hi,
(Note: I'm the Assembly of God district supt. for Northern New England - Maine, NH, VT)
Didn't know how to send an e-mail to Steve Strang ... so will send it this way ... I send the following note to the Washington Post ...
I was an Assembly of God Youth Pastor for several years in Arlington, Virginia years ago ... yes, a Pentecostal minister ... I hardly think the Washington Post is a "fair" print paper toward either the Republican candidate Palin or Pentecostals ... as was evidenced by the recent lampoon of her speaking in tongues. Somehow some of you in the press have forgotten that John Ashcroft, the former Attorney General of the United States was also Assembly of God, thus a Pentecostal; so was James Watt ... former Secretary of the Interior. Pentecostals are hardly "crazy" people ... there are literally millions of us in this country who are proud, many of us are Democrats and hard working responsible people who decry being castigated as "fanatics" ... religious or otherwise. The political landscape of Pentecostals is just as widespread as in the general population; and the obdurate depiction by the constant negative attitudes in the Washington Post is hardly what I call "fair" reporting. Nor is it responsible journalism. And of course, when raised you and many others raise your self-righteous attitude that you are simply "reporting" not taking sides. Jesus once said of the self righteous that they were "blind guides" Religious people can become "self-righteous" ... so can news reporters!
By the way, the reason you may have only received 350 negative responses to the lampoon of Palin could be due to the fact that many conservatives and religious people avoid your paper like the plague because of its learnings against them ... hence there are few who see those lampoons and read those liberal diatribes! If so, the amount of responses you get may be coming from a biased audience who is "with you most of the time" .... have you ever thought of this? Thus your responses are likely to be skewed toward the majority in favor of liberal views!

To the Editors:
I just saw the cartoon published by your online edition on September 9, wherein a joke is made regarding Sarah Palin's spiritual affections.
To see this tasteless caricature appear in one of America's leading publications, online or otherwise, is a sad thing to be sure, and shows how truly desperately the left would love to be able to discredit the Republican candidate's campaign. However this giddy sendup, based as it is in utter ignorance and religious bigotry, may offend more of your own readers than you might guess, while establishing a new high-water mark for religious intolerance and Bible-bashing.
Too bad for Mr. Oliphant, who, though clearly possessing a certain ability with an inkpen, now reveals himself as a hardcore liberal bigot only too happy to expose the peculiarity of those he is uncomfortable with... while protecting even stranger tendencies in those whom he likes. (Mr. Oliphant's proudly-displayed, top-to-bottom bias is something one can glean from any reasonable scan of his work in the Post; I keep missing his cartoons aimed at the Dem candidate's religious affiliations, background and ties, which to many will offer a good deal more fodder than anything in Palin's background. Indeed, Mr. Oliphant's "criticism" of Obama seems limited to picking on the Clintons for trying to control him--see Aug. 20, 2008--while his tributes to McCain's camp run an opposite, but equally small gamut--from the lipstick-on-a-pig verse to the assumed fear of facing the current financial crisis.) Oliphant's narrow-minded, razor-thin understanding of Evangelicals makes one wonder what else he might be missing. At the very least, it must keep him from reaching his potential, and from joining the handful of souls who own the stage at the highest pinnacle of his craft.
Like the liberal shills in charge of NBC, or the empty-headed hotheads who headline daily on The View.
But aside from all of that, someone has by now hopefully told Mr. Oliphant that the thing he mocks was as evident in the early church (those to whom Paul originally wrote about this subject; see 1 Corinthians 14) as it is in the church of today. And although this particular gift is indeed given to occasional excess, which is one reason Paul wrote his letter to the Corinthians, tongues were (see 1 Cor. 14:39, and still are, considered a gift from God.
While theologians continue to work out what it could possibly mean to commit "blasphemy against the Spirit," your sage cartoonist should take care to at least read the related Biblical passage (Matt 12:22-31), noting that such offense relates to the Person who is Himself the author of the gift Mr. O. mocks with obvious glee (see Acts 2:4, Acts 19:6). My free advice for your cartoonist: if he wants to beat up on Pentecostals, Christians, Evangelicals, etc., he might at least want to avoid shaking his fist at the One they represent. And indeed if, as Paul the Apostle stated, tongues were meant as a sign to unbelievers (1 Cor 14:22), then Mr. Oliphant has surely missed the point.
And finally, some free advice for your editors: A great number of Evangelicals (including Pentecostals) can actually read and think, create lists, and yes-- even consider which newspapers and columns they subscribe to. If you want more evangelical readership, at least consider making your publication's attacks less one-sided against them. You don't have to understand something to allow for it's existence.
If Mr. Oliphant is the sort who looks for ways to better himself through the considered thoughts of those in his audience, I offer the foregoing as a means of helping him reach a new level of understanding. If, on the other hand, he views these kinds of comments as proof of his success--he's hit the bull's eye and got another conservative troubled enough to write a letter--then he's every bit the knee-jerk liberal he's made himself out to be.
Toward a better political discussion,
Don Godwin

Where one nation under God was the foundation of our country. We have stood by and allowed God, little by little begin to be many Gods. How the foundation is getting weak. It's time for Christians and believers in our country to once again, stand up for a Righteous Lord & Savior, that our land my be healed.

I just couldn't believe what I was seeing and how God is being depicted in the cartoon about Sarah Palin. What far left wing liberals forget is that this great nation's founding fathers were pastors, ministers and men who fought for freedom of religion. They would roll over in their graves if they could see and hear what people are saying about the Christian faith these days. "In God we Trust" was put on our money for a reason. So was "one Nation under God", but the radical views of a few are trying to take away our rights to continue the beliefs that this nation was founded upon. We better pray that God doesn't take His hand off of us!

A recent opinion article by Deepak Chopra posted on his website The upshot of Chopra's article was that McCain's choice of Palin was essentially a choice of someone who is the direct opposite of Obama in every respect, and that this choice served to reinforce the McCain campaign's overarching strategy, which is straight out of the Ronald Reagan campaign's playbook: fear and negativity masquerading as pride and patriotism.

However, since I get to 'hire' the applicants having seen what they have done with their lives (and how they have lived their lives) and how they express their faith (something not shown on a resume), I think I'll have my secretary fire off a "thanks, but no thanks" letter to the Obama/Biden tandem.

Let us be honest, Mr. Strang. We all know that none of this is true, so your argument is weak as well as false. It is clear for anyone who reads or listens to the news that Romney and Obama's connection to these faiths are very much in the news and have been since the campaign began.
We seem to see a lot of needless protection of Sarah Palin--which which by itself is somewhat sexist. A Vice-Presidential candidate will have to be able to handle themselves (man or woman) without babysitting--can she handle the heat? I am beginning to wonder.

Here's my e-mail to the Washington Post:
Your political cartoon regarding Sarah Palin’s Pentecostal faith was inappropriate and offensive. It doesn’t matter that it appeared only in the Sept. 9 online edition, and not in print. The media would be lampooned if it vilified Mitt Romney for his Mormon faith during his candidacy. The entire country would be in an uproar if a Muslim candidate’s was the subject of such scorn. Yet for some unknown reason, it appears to be open season on Christians by the media. Shame on you.
I am aware that there is no law that says the media can't offend us. It is not only impolite, but you are insulting the 20 million to 30 million Pentecostals and charismatic Christians in this country, many of whom were your readers (please not the past tense). The Washington Post should know better, and exercised extremely poor judgment in posting it. I should think an apology to the Christian community by your editorial board should be forthcoming.
