Perspective on Financial Mess on Wall Street

The thing that's on everyone's mind seems to be the financial crisis on Wall Street and the $700 billion bail-out that is being proposed in Congress.

This morning I read two articles that to me bring clarity on the seriousness of the financial crisis and the need for John McCain to step up and provide decisive leadership.

The first article is by Governor Mike Huckabee called "Bail Out" who I've come to respect and who I supported in the Presidential primaries. The next is by Newt Gingrich who I believe is one of the most astute political observers in Washington. Feel free to forward these to your associates and friends. As always, give us your thoughts on the blog at the end of the Strang Report.

Bail Out, by Mike Huckabee
September 23, 2008 - 08:01 PM
http://www.huckpac.com/?FuseAction=Blogs.View&Blog_id=1899

Frankly, I’m disappointed and disgusted with my own Republican party as I watch them attempt to strong-arm a bailout of some of America’s biggest corporations by asking the taxpayers to suck up the staggering results of the hubris, greed, and arrogance of those who sought to make a quick buck by throwing the dice. They lost, but want the rest of us to cover their bets so they won’t be effected in their lavish lifestyles as they figure out how to spend their tens of millions and in some cases, hundreds of millions in bonuses and compensation which was their reward for not only sinking their companies, but basically doing the same to the entire American economy.

It’s especially disconcerting to see the very people who pilloried me during the Presidential campaign for being a “populist” and not “understanding Wall Street” to now line up like thirsty dogs at the Washington, D. C. water dish, otherwise known as Congress, and plead for help. I thought these guys were the smartest people in America! I thought that taxpayers like you and I were similar to the people at the U. N. who have no translator speaking into their headset - that we just needed to trust those that I called the power bunch in the “Wall Street to Washington axis of power.”

The idea of a government bailout in which we’d entrust $700 billion to one man without Congressional oversight or accountability is absurd. My party or not, that is insanity and I believe unconstitutional.

Will there be far-reaching consequences without some intervention? Probably, but we honestly don’t know since we’ve really never seen this level of greed and stupidity all rolled into one massive move. But may I suggest that letting “Uncle Sugar” step in and bail out the billionaires who made the mess will be far worse and will start a long line of companies and individuals who will demand the same of the government---which last time I checked means that they will be demanding it out of YOU and ME. This is not money that Congress is risking from THEIR pockets or future, but ours. Many if not most of us have already experienced lost value on our homes, retirement accounts, and pensions. Now they’d like for us to assume some further risks so they won’t have to.

What happened to the “free market” idea? Is that only our view when we WIN and when we LOSE, we ask the government to come in and take away the pain?

If you are a small business owner, is this the way it works at your place? When you have a bad month, a bad year, or face having to close, can you go up to Congress and get them to write YOU a fat check to take away your risk?

Some of what contributed to this disaster is too much government in the form of Sarbanes/Oxley. Some is due to the tax structure that created the hunger for companies to “game” the system. Some is the common sense that was ignored like loaning money to people who can’t pay it back.

Wall Street has become Las Vegas east, but at least in Vegas, people KNOW they are gambling and they don’t expect the government to cover their losses at the tables. In Wall Street, they do. And the American taxpayer burdens the responsibility.

If Congress wants to do something, here are some suggestions:

1. Eliminate ALL capital gains taxes and taxes on savings and dividends right now. Free up the capital and encourage investment. This is the kind of economic stimulus the Fair Tax would bring and if Congress is going to lose money, let them lose it with lower taxes, not with public dollar bailouts of private market mistakes.

2. Repeal Sarbanes/Oxley. It has failed. It was supposed to prevent this. It didn’t. Kill it.

3. Demand that the executives who steered their ships into the ground be forced to pay back the losses of their companies. Of course, they can’t, so let them work and give back to the government and they can live like the people they put on the streets or kept there. It makes no sense to put them in jail—that’s just more they will cost you and me. I’d rather them go out and earn money—just not get to keep so much of it this time. I’m not talking about limiting CEO salaries---just those of the people who now are up in Washington begging for help because they ruined their companies.

Attempts by Democrats and Republicans to blame each other is nonsense. They are both guilty and ought to own up and admit it. They all lived off big campaign contributions and the swill of the lobbyists who strong armed them into permission to steal. Enough of blame. Fix it!

This would be a start. If we don’t hold these guys responsible, we are all finished.

Gingrich: McCain Must Oppose Bailout
http://newt.org/tabid/102/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/3733/Gingrich-McCain-Must-Come-Out-Against-Bailout.aspx

September 23, 2008 5:11 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that President Bush's proposed bailout plan is a "dead loser on Election Day" and urged Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to come out against it, saying that the GOP nominee cannot be for it and maintain his claim to be a reformer.

"I don't know how he can vote for this and with a straight face go around and say that he's for real change and he's the reform candidate," Gingrich told ABC News.

Gingrich's comments were the latest sign that the presidential campaign could be upended by the Bush administration's $700 billion plan to buy up and hopefully resell troubled mortgage-backed securities.

If McCain were to come out against the bailout plan, Gingrich said that Republicans would rally to his side and it would become possible for the McCain-Palin ticket to style itself as "taking on the Bush-Obama establishment."

"Either McCain is going to go along" with Obama in supporting the plan, said Gingrich, "in which case the establishment will have the fix in . . . or you are going to see McCain decide, much in the way that he did in picking Palin, that, in fact, he is a genuine maverick, that he genuinely defends the taxpayers, and that this is a terrible bill."

"If the latter happens," Gingrich continued, "I think you will see the emergence overnight of a 'McCain Reform Wing of the Republican Party' and you'll see House and Senate members siding with McCain by overwhelming margins and then you'll be in a very different political environment. You'll have 'Bush-Obama ads' on the one side and 'taking on the Bush-Obama establishment' on the other side, and that will be, frankly, one of the more amazing elections."

Left unsaid by the former Speaker is the possibility that the bailout plan would simply die if McCain were to come out against it, which in turn, could deprive the McCain-Palin ticket of the opportunity to run against the "Bush-Obama establishment."

"If McCain doesn't come out for this, it's over," a top House Republican told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Tuesday.

Gingrich is against the bailout plan because he thinks it is "inconceivable" that the Treasury and Fed can manage Wall Street.

While coming out against the bailout plan, Gingrich forcefully rejected the contention that he favors doing nothing and laid out a conservative alternative.

Gingrich's four-point plan includes: (1) suspending immediately mark to market provisions (the accounting practice of valuing a financial position in an investment at its current market price) in the hopes of stopping the downward spiral in asset values and eventually replacing it with a three year rolling average; (2) repealing immediately Sarbanes-Oxley, the 2002 accounting law Gingrich described as "an enormous drag on small business"; (3) setting the capital gains tax rate at zero "matching the Chinese and Singapore" (to encourage private capital to flood into the market picking up properties without the taxpayers being at risk); and (4) passing an "extraordinarily powerful" energy bill ("to return $500 billion a year to the American economy that are currently going overseas").

Gingrich spoke with ABC News in Washington, D.C., after participating in a polling presentation sponsored by American Solutions, the group he established last year which works to identify issues that have a majority support among Republicans, Democrats, and independents.

Dear Friend,

This year's Super Bowl was a day I will never forget. There will be many stories told of the behind-the-scenes events that led up to that historic game. God moved so suddenly and miraculously there that "David Tyree" has become a household name. And, because of a couple of plays, now people want to know my story.

More Than Just The Catch tells my story. It includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. When you finish it, you will know that its message is about more than a game. It is about a life changed and the One who changed it. God allowed me to be a part of what some people have called the greatest play in Super Bowl history to provide a platform so that He would get the glory. I believe that many lives will be touched by the truth of this.

My motive for sharing my life story is to encourage others to put their trust in God. I want people to know that Jesus is real. I pray that my testimony will release miracles to every person who reads it. I especially want to shout out this promise to the young people who think it is boring to serve God: miracles are never boring!

I also pray that my story will touch the lives of professional athletes who have been distracted and separated from the reality of what success is. When the cameras' flashing lights dim and go out, I cannot be a hero to the world and not be a hero to my children. Success in the eyes of men means nothing to me if I am not successful in the eyes of my wife. There is no great career in the spotlight without a great family life behind the scenes. True happiness extends past the winning touchdown or the greatest catch. Great moments like these mean nothing if there is no peace in your heart.

I pray that everyone who reads my story will get the message behind the miracle. Don't try to figure it out. God don't make sense—He makes miracles!

How could you say Sarah is such a Christian with such an out of control family ? Husband joined a club that wanted to seperate themselves from the US?McCain listened to questions at Saddleback;Duh!! You People!!! You won't let her be investigated no fair. Bless you!!!!

How could Samuel have been a prophet of God whose words did not fall to the ground with HIS family far more out of control than YOU CLAIM Sarah Palin's is (BTW, I do not buy that characterization of her family. Not at all)?

On another note: GET GAS ... GET YOUR MONEY OUT OF THE BANK ... GET DRY FOOD ... GET WATER ... the President addresses the nation at 9 pm tonight. You've been warned ... 5 hours early.

Dredging up John and Cindy McCain's sin 30-year-old sin? Nice try, ANONYMOUS person. Shall we dredge up all your 30-year-old sins. Such partisan sentiments do not belong among us.

Who is stopping the investigation of Sarah Palin? Is someone stopping Campbell Brown? Is someone stopping the New York Times? US Weekly?

What is wrong with you, ANONYMOUS person? Did you just recently come back to earth on a space shuttle?

No, that's silly of me. You are just being a silly partisan, aren't you?

    Grow up.

Sarah`s family is not out of control. If you had a daughter who chose to do something you did not agree with,at the age of sixteen, there would not be a thing in the world you could do about it. I am sure that daughter had been taught well. The family seems like a good family to me. Things happen with people of all ages.....It`s called "Bad Choices".

I know of many fine Christian families who have had similar things happen. You go on loving them and welcoming the new baby into the family with much love.

For those who has already left comments, I do not think it is appropriate to judge Sarah Palin or anyone else for that matter. God is the judge of character, not man. I appreciate these articles and find them to be very true. Mike Huckabee is very right with being disappointed in the 700 billion dollar proposal to save a bunch of rich people. What about the rest of us suffering the housing crisis and the oil crisis?

    Taking anon 12:55 pm apart ... point-by-point:

    1) McCain's first wife has forgiven him (and publicly supports him for president) ... how about you forgiving him?

    2) Is Piper out of control? Is Willow? Do you have evidence, beyond one instance of passion, that Bristol is out of control? (of course you don't ... YOU seem out of control ... you're not Jeremiah Wright, are you?)

    3) That the First Dude might have been CONSIDERING how Alaskans could best conduct their affairs is some great affront to you? If so, what elected office is he seeking? Do think he'll try to take the District of Columbia out of the Union? Sheesh.

    4) You have not a shred of evidence that McCain listened to the questions Obama was asked ... other than your suspicions which were aroused by how BADLY MCCAIN BEAT OBAMA IN THAT FORUM ... lol.

    5) Stephen Strang is keeping her from being investigated? If not, what people are you talking about? (We're not supposed to say, You People, you know.)

That's right. The reason why Obama's campaign and the liberal media wondered about whether or not McCain heard the questions in advance, is because he trounced The Eloquent One at his own game ... words. Too bad, so sad. But, hey, it is good they were honest enough to know Obama got beat.

To stay out on the campaign trail just making speeches is not going to help America at this critical hour. Rolling up your shirtsleeves and helping the nation is what these two are paid for as senators. It would should the kind of leadership we expect from the next president.

McCain is going to do just that. Obama wants to make speeches and debate. Just talk. Just words.

It has always been my personal belief that the first sin ever committed AGAINST Earth was greed — the greed that motivated Lucifer to lust for what was rightfully God's own dominion, which resulted in "the war in the heavenlies" where Lucifer and his one-third of the angel host were defeated and cast out. Then the first sin ever committed ON Earth was also greed — the greed that Satan whispered into Eve's ear that motivated her to disobey God's own law and reach for what was forbidden. Greed continues to be the most powerful sin-motivation among Mankind today ... and what we are seeing on Wall Street RIGHT NOW is evidence of greed run rampant. Let us all ask Holy Spirit to help identify what areas in our own lives that greed may have taken hold, and with humility and repentance, ask God to "create is me a clean heart." From that place of having newly-cleaned hearts, we can most effectively target our prayers for our nation as we go through this difficult time ... always remembering that God IS on the Throne, and none of these events have taken Him by surprise.

Well, I see that the "so-called Church" is still at it, refusing to put God FIRST to replace their worldly values with those of the Kingdom of God. I do believe that is what He asked for the Church to do. And as so much of the Church is NOT ADOPTING GOD'S VALUES, but insist on their own same-o same-o, isn't it fair to say they are NOT GENUINE CHRISTIANS? i.e per the standards that GOD SETS, not the standards of men. So why talk of sin that is 30 years old? Jesus, if He was asked, has long ago forgiven it and does not even remember it-He cast it far away, as far as the east is from the west. Why is Sarah so much less a Christian because of ANOTHER PERSON'S ACTIONS. I have searched and searched and found no reference to God's judgement under the NEW TESTAMENT against one individual for another's transgression. What"Church" did they get that crap out of????? No wonder they choose to be anonymous. That's just the way satan DOES BUSINESS, ISN'T IT?

Now, about the bailout. The answer, I believe is NO, at least in the form it is currently presented. The principles of the Kingdom call for us to be RESPONSIBLE individuals and as such we do not look to government bailouts, especially for a priviledged few whose actions have been totally SELFISH, GREEDY and STUPID! If the average small businessman could equally access the same forgiveness when he has made STUPID, GREEDY and SELFISH decisions, it might be a little acceptable for this world we live in but are NOT a part of that world..We have to ALWAYS REMEMBER, WE are NOT OF THIS WORLD and live accordingly. How??? Trust God. BELIEVE His WORD. Trust HIS WORD. WALK BY FAITH and NOT BY SIGHT! He takes pleasure in OUR prosperity and that does NOT come through any of the means used by this world. Afterall, remember the land of GOSHEN! Remember JOB!

Although it kills me to imagine what would happen in an economic meltdown, it kills me even more that so called 'intelligent and knowledgeable' professionals on Wall Street could have engaged in such a bizarre feeding frenzy and expect Washington to bail them out. That's absurd! Every day we teach our children that there are consequences from all decisions, right or wrong. Let Wall Street and the Billionaires live with the consequences of their decisions and we'll just have to deal with the trickle down results to us lowly folks. I applaud the suggestions made by both Newt and Mike. I think these options are much more favorable to the country as a whole, especially long term. Finally, let's lay up our treasures in Heaven, where moth and rust don't affect them. Thanks!

Thank you for the information, the media is not speaking much on this. I just would like to say GOD knows all and sees all. There is no one in position that God has not allowed to be placed there. Joseph being inslaved, was all a part of Gods Divine plan. God revealed to him the famine that was going to take place in the land. Pharo an Egyptian king was raised up for Gods pupose for all the world to see, his heart was harden by the LORD. Lets not leave out Nebuchadnezzar a pagan king that God allowed his chosen to sit under. The Earth is the lord and the fullness thereof; the World, and they that dwell therein. Gods ways are not our ways and his thoughts are higher than ours. our finite minds can not imagine Gods plans for these United States. Lets stop giving our opnions and going into agreement with the world we are not suppose to see or view anything through the eyes of man. Where are the Holyghost filled Christian. The spirit of the one and only true living GOD.The mind of Christ is who we are to follow instead of having these petty debates on who is or should be doing what. Has any body prayed and consulted The almighty and all knowing one on any of these matters.

Thanks for these articles Steve. Diamondchelle, commenting on and discussing these matters is very important. We pray for the Lord's intervention. We air out our perceptions to hone them into consensus. Mr. Huckabee certainly prays for wisdom. It's sad to see America in a place where it must react from a basis of fear--which is never a good place for deciding how to proceed. So hopefully men of faith--who won't react from fear, will concoct this "rescue" without letting the guilty fat cats go free, while still protecting the innocents who most surely will be crushed if no action is taken at all. It's always scary when the government has to step in and fix anything. Reminds me of a column I read in Forbes Magazine recently by a British columnist who warned of history's lessons about government intervention in economic crisis. He pointed out the Panic of 1920--was it Pres. Hoover? Whomever--he did nothing--and the panic resolved itself. But in the Crash of 1929--FDR rushed in... the colunist presumes that government intervention only prolonged the Great Depression, when had matters been left alone, bad business would have fallen away, to be replaced by surviving good business. We should pray that God's hand drives the pen that writes this "new deal," lest Mr. Huckabee's and this Forbes British columnist's worst fears come to fruition. And Diamondchelle, you are correct in that we who pray need not fear. Let us say an Amen to that and get busy doing it--and fast!

Who wrote the above post, Billy Bruce ... or, Joe Biden?

FDR was elected president and began his first term in 1932.

Billy bruce I do not know what your trying to say. Let me explain what I was saying, clearer for you. God is in control of all things, even when famine came to his people, he already had a divine plan set in place to provide through it. People who we least expect God used them for his purpose.I am saying if we tune into God and turn up our Holyghost antennas we would not be guessing or criticising any man. No matter what the plan is, It could be God in the mist.

As I watch in amazement of the financial mess the United States is in; I know that no one man or orgaziation has the answer. We need supernatural intervention as prescribed in II Chronicles 7:14. It is time for the church to arise and become the light of the World. Even as I vote in November; I will vote for the candidate that God has ordained for these end times: this man has been processed by God to be the next President. God Bless......Rosa Brown

anon 10:36 we are blessed to live among such uninformed citizenry. Right now, the big banks are not extending credit to each other ... this is quite serious. BUT, your fellow citizens think this financial crisis is some kind of populists vs. Big Business tug o' war. Just be thankful these fellow citizens don't know how tense things are right now. Google it: Paulson said citizens should be SCARED ... he said this yesterday.

BTW, thanks for heeding my alarm.

AS much as I would like to think that there is a simple answer to all this, I don't think there is. Yet, I do believe that the only answer for any real Christian is prayer and fasting. If you're not doing that now, prevailng with God, then you aren't getting the seriousness of this whole thing. WE all ought to be in prayer and repenting for our nation's sins before God today, and through this crisis. When we need a miracle, we can't go to the Senate or Congress for it...we'd better go to God. Leaning on the arm of flesh got us where we are....lets start leaning on the Mercy and Wisdom of God in this one, and ask Him to provide the answer. None of us is bright enough to figure this out on our own, and I agree, God is not surprised by this situation, He is waiting for us to look to Him for answers. If God is God to you, then you are going to be praying, and fasting until God moves on our behalf. Stop the blame game, both republicans and democrats are part of the problem in this issue, and it serves no purpose to thrash around in the mud. PRAY, PRAY, Cry out to God, and KEEP your eyes on HIM. IF He directs our paths, we will get out of this -- if He doesn't, it will be because we have not sought Him in the manner he requires. So go PRAY!!! Cathy

I wonder if Cathy is right about repenting for our nation's sins.

We are not a theocracy like Israel was in the Old Testament, so repenting on behalf on our secular nation may not be meaningful.

    I confess MY sins daily.

The poster above obviously does not know what this discussion is about.

It's like the old joke, "I don't understand the question, but the answer must be Jesus."

Obama supporters join these threads --- this one about a financial crisis --- and say, "I don't know what this issue is about, but the answer is Obama."

    How boring.

Wrong, or late, seeing Bentley as a problem. Wrong to endorse McCain (not wrong to VOTE for him, just wrong to use Charisma's pages to endorse).

    You're wrong a lot.

But, THIS TIME you are right.

Senators Shelby and Bunning are carrying the water on this one. The Bush/Paulson plan is bad and must be stopped.

Good job, Steve ... this time.

This commend is to all the christians who cut to pieces Mc Cain for leaving his family 30 yrs ago, and why Palin is not a so called excepted christian....
If you want judgement and lovelessness, ask a christian. They look at their own live with pink glasses and others with magnif. glasses. Unless you walked in somebodies shoes, don't judge, pray for them. God says you judging others will come back to you.
Also God says: Ps. 103= as far as the east is from the west, I will remember your sins no more.
    1. JOhn 1:9 = if you confess your sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us from ALL unright.ness.
A third point and very important to most american people is: can he lead the country out of this mess. That does not depend on if he left his wife or if Palins daughter is pregnant or...... but are they both smart enough to save this country from going down even more.

    God’s Economy versus Our Economy
    by Mike Barclay
    http://chaplainmikeb.blogspot.com

The stock market may be crashing. Gas is almost four dollars a gallon. The housing market may only be halfway through its decline. Jobs are hard to find and many companies are downsizing further. The cost of groceries continues to go up. Inflation is rising much faster than the average household income. By all earthly standards, things are tough and only getting tougher. If you are a person who puts your faith in your bank account, your ability to provide for yourself and in this American economy then by all means, you have many reasons to fear.

God’s economy however, is nothing like our economy.

Deuteronomy 8:18 shares that it is God, and not anyone or anything else that is responsible for what we have.

“But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.” (NIV)

Luke 6:38 tells us that if we are lacking, the answer is not to chase after what we lack, but to give what we can.

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (NIV)

1 Timothy 6:17-19 tells us how we ought to handle any wealth that God allows us to have.

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” (NIV)

Malachi 3:8-12 tells us that we can not afford NOT to tithe.

"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' "In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty. (NIV)

Psalm 46 tells us that even if our nation falls away and our economy crumbles we have no reason to fear.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (NIV)

The answer to our current financial hardship may not make sense with human understanding but it is the only answer that has any real power.
1.) Trust that God will provide you with the things you need.
2.) When you see a need, do what you can to give.
3.) Rest assured that God is in control.
4.) Be faithful to give your tithes and offerings.
5.) Do your part to exalt him among the nations and in all the earth.
