I Believe John Hagee Is Becoming a Statesman

It's been interesting to watch the development of a statesman. That's how I feel about my longtime friend John Hagee. He has been tried in the furnace of adversity and, in my opinion, he's come out shining like gold. I can't imagine anyone who has suffered more controversy than Hagee has in the last year.

I had only a moment to greet Pastor Hagee after the Night to Honor Israel event Tuesday before his staff whisked him away, but I looked at him in the eye, told him that I was proud to serve with him in Christians United for Israel (CUFI) and that I believed that he was developing into a real "spiritual statesman." I agree with my friend Rabbi Aaron Rubinger that he is not only one of the great friends of the Jewish people, but I believe he is one of the great Christian leaders of our time.

Full disclosure: Not only am I Hagee's publisher, but I've been involved with CUFI since it was founded in February 2006. I serve as CUFI regional director over Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Hagee's trial by fire began with the controversy over his book In Defense of Israel, which I had the privilege of publishing. Interestingly, In Defense of Israel won a first place in the "social issues" category of the Retailer's Choice Awards, which were announced at the International Christian Retailer Show in Orlando, Fla., last week.

Hagee had not known about the award, and his staff asked me to present it to him at one of the CUFI events in Washington, D.C., this week. It was very meaningful to him because the book had come under such criticism that he ended up rewriting large sections in order to clarify what he believes about Israel and God's plan of salvation for the Jews. Some Christians accused him of believing in “dual covenant” theology, which teaches that Jews can go to heaven by keeping the Law of Moses.

In the first session at the CUFI Washington Summit July 21-24, there was a 15-minute question and answer period. Someone went to the microphone and asked Hagee about what he believed about dual covenant. If I remember what he said correctly, he said that he never believed in dual covenant--that he didn't believe in it now and never would.

The next controversy that drew national attention came two months after he endorsed Sen. John McCain for president in Texas in early March. McCain won the Republican primary in Texas, and I believe Hagee’s endorsement proved to be pivotal. Sen. McCain had flown to Texas to personally ask for Hagee’s endorsement.

Several weeks later, Sen. Barack Obama came under criticism because of comments his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, made that many consider to be racist and anti-American. I believe that there were those on the left who wanted to create a Rev. Wright-type of controversy around Sen. McCain and tried to connect him to John Hagee, whom they were trying to portray as being as radical as Rev. Wright. Nothing is further from the truth.

Hagee has actually had very little interaction with Sen. McCain. But these leftists, principally a rabbi named Eric Yoffie, took a comment that Hagee made about God using the Holocaust to bring about the founding of Israel as a Jewish homeland in 1948 out of context.

As it's turned out, the Jewish community has generally stood solidly behind Hagee, and at the CUFI conference several Jews even said that what Hagee said is considered mainline theology, particularly in the Orthodox community. One of my rabbi friends, a conservative Jew who admits that he does not take the Hebrew Scriptures literally, told me that there are three different times that the Torah says that nothing happens without it being God's will, which would include, taken literally, that the Holocaust, as horrible as it was, had to be God's will.

These evil people tried to twist that into saying that John Hagee is anti-Semitic. The fact is that no one has probably done more for the state of Israel or the Jewish people in our generation than John Hagee, a fact that is recognized by many. My friend Aaron Rubinger, who attended the CUFI summit as a guest, leaned over during the session and whispered in my ear that John Hagee may be one of the greatest friends of the Jewish people of all time, a comment that he later repeated to John Hagee when we were chatting privately.

Thankfully, that controversy died down quickly, but not before the McCain camp made a knee-jerk reaction and said they rejected Hagee's endorsement. Hagee followed up by withdrawing his endorsement.

During his rousing speech at the Night to Honor Israel event Tuesday Hagee made several comments, emphasizing on each of them what the Jews say about the Holocaust: “Never again!” And in a humorous moment he added what his response will be when asked to endorse a presidential candidate: “Never again!” The crowd laughed and seemed to love it.

The other great controversy was over the Roman Catholic Church. He was accused of calling the Catholic Church the whore of Babylon. That is a term from the book of Revelation, not one that Hagee made up. There are some extremist Bible teachers who have taught that over the years, but Hagee is not one of them. He teaches that the apostate church—the ones who don't follow the Bible and who reject Jesus—will be the great of whore of Babylon.

He recently sat down with Roman Catholics, met with them face to face, and they not only resolved their differences but emerged as great friends.

I've known John Hagee since the early 1980s—before he had a large TV ministry or was famous. I admire his work in San Antonio at Cornerstone Church. He has built that church to 19,000 members. I also admire the family life he has. I know each of his children personally. They are all fine young people, all of them involved in ministry in some way. I've seen him interact with his family, and he's a great role model. To me, John Hagee is the real deal.

However, Hagee has always been a bit of a loner, in my opinion. He's been the kind of person who has put his head down and did what he had to do to get the job done, and didn't really care if he got approval or not from others. That is a great trait, and he has accomplished a lot of great things.

But that trait of doing things yourself does not make it easy to be a networker, and it doesn't make it easy to learn to dialogue with your enemies, or even sometimes to compromise in the sense of learning the things that offend others and perhaps learning to make your statements in ways that do not compromise what you believe, but to say it in a way that is non-offensive to others.

Because I'm his publisher and because I've been involved in decisions on how to word things I can say that John Hagee does not compromise—he believes the Bible, and he does not back off in any way. But he has also learned that the kinds of things that sound great in a Pentecostal sermon and get charismatics excited sometimes are misunderstood or offend people from other religious backgrounds. He has learned to be a real diplomat and move in very high circles, not only among Christians but also in the Jewish community and now among Roman Catholics.

One of the sessions that I enjoyed the most at the CUFI event was a speech by radio talk-show host and columnist Dennis Prager, a Jew from Southern California who came to John Hagee's defense during the recent controversy. Prager said a lot of great things, but one thing that stood out to me was his comment about the difference between being famous and being significant. He said that very rarely are the famous significant, and only rarely are the significant famous. I believe that John Hagee is a significant leader.

I know for a fact that Hagee gets things done behind the scenes, he motivates thousands of people at the grassroots, and he inspires millions more through his books and television program. But it's interesting that, due to his recent media firestorm and of course his own exposure in media through television and books, that he is one of those few people who is both significant and famous.

I encourage you to make plans to attend the CUFI Washington Summit next year, particularly if you live in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Those are the states in the region that I lead. I was very proud of the people from our region who turned out in great numbers and enthusiastically lobbied our congressmen and senators.

I also appreciate the leadership of Bishop Paul Zink, the Florida state director, Pastor Michael Stevens, the North Carolina state director, and Scott Allen, who substituted very capably for Bishop Jim Bolin, the Georgia state director, who is recuperating from an illness. Currently, I am the acting state director for South Carolina, and we had a great group from that state.

There are others who are also involved in leadership, principally Scott and Cindy Thomas of Lakeland, Fla.; Gary Cristofaro of Melbourne, Fla.; and others who are too numerous to mention. I want to publicly thank them for all they've done and say that I had a lot of fun in Washington meeting with them, working with them and solving a few logistical glitches that came up. And as I told the group, just coming to Washington and being a part of history, and seeing what God is doing with Christians United for Israel, is a lot of fun.

Having just read both the Charisma Newsletter article and also Mr. Steve Strang’s commentary, and also having just returned from the CUFI Washington-Israel Summit (having attended last year as well), I simply wish to support both the letter and the spirit of what was written. I witnessed the excitement, energy and enthusiasm of those in attendance meshing wonderfully with the dedication, attention to detail, and superb servant-attitude by those responsible for planning and implementing this CUFI event as well as with the committed, passionate and top-caliber leadership exhibited by CUFI’s staff and leadership team. As one of my own greatest experiences, I well recall several dozen standing ovations during one particular breakout session moderated by Steve Strang, “How to Stop Funding the Enemy: Divestment, Sanctions and Boycotts” and the powerful, inspirational, and practical talks/deliveries by House Majority Leader (FL), Adam Hasner; City Councilman Andre Williams; and Nitsana Darshan-Leitner giving needed educational support, as well as practical tips and advice, for fighting the terrorists with our wallets.
Pastor Hagee, David Brog, Steve Strang, Gary Bauer, Joe Lieberman, and so many others associated with this extraordinary event should be commended and praised for their exceptional leadership, courage and support.

In 1976, God revealed to my small church group His undying love for His land, Israel, and His people, the Jewish people. He revealed to us, individually and collectively, the call to comfort His people, Israel.
Since then I have seen the ebb and flow of Christians demonstrating their love for the Jewish people and support for Israel. My heart always leaps within me to see Christians come into this calling, and I am glad to read that Steve Strang is actively involved with CUFI!
I have been asked by Jewish people why do I care about them? My reply is always the same. Because of Jesus. This always opens the door for more conversation.
One time while traveling in Israel, I met a young Jewish woman who had left her entire family in Australia to come live in Israel to be where she was part of the majority and no longer a minority. We spent several hours together talking about Judaism and Christianity. Suddenly, she asked me why I didn't just convert to Judaism since I "knew so much" about the faith and Israel. I told her because I believe Jesus is the Son of God. She asked if I couldn't just renounce Him? I simply said that I couldn't because it was because of Him that I had this love in my heart for the Jewish people and Israel.
She was silent, then expressed a desire to understand this "novelty" better. We did not have that chance to continue the conversation. However, I knew that a wall had been torn down.
I am no one. I can't bring about change in a government. But I am called to love and comfort His people. As a publisher, Steve Strang is in a position -- arranged by God! -- to be a larger voice to reach and encourage Christians to comfort His people.
Thank you, Steve, for what you are doing! And, by the way, I think you look very pleasant san mustache!

Love and worship is due God, only. John Hagee's blind love and worship of the Israelies does not bring them to Christ and does not make him a Christian Statesman. Let us shine the light on Christ that ALL , including the Israelies, may see Him.

With all due respect, Len, please read the Scriptures more closely. John Hagee is not blindly loving Israelis, nor is he worshiping them. He is following God's command to comfort His people. And in this context, it is plainly written, His people Israel.
Also reread the passages in which Jesus tells his followers that those who give food or help to the least of His brothers has done it unto Him. In this context His brothers are not only Christians in later times, but the Jewish people. When a Canaanite woman came to Him asking Him to help her demon-possessed daughter, Jesus said that He was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. (Matt. 15:26)After she continued after Him, Jesus saw her faith and granted her desire.
How fortunate we are that God revealed to Peter that Gentiles were brought into relationship with Him through the blood of Christ.
One of the ways that we shine the light on Messiah (Christ in the Greek) is by allowing Him to shine through us. After all, we can do nothing without Him.
In any event, continue to shine the light of Christ on those you come in contact with, and the love of God will keep your heart through Jesus Christ.

I would like to see Pastor Hagee condemn the Jews for Jesus and Messianic Jews who intentionally avoid mentioning that they believe Jesus is God in the flesh and part of a Trinity.

This intentional and deceptive tactic was introduced in 1980 when Jews for Jesus founder Moshe Rosen said in his book “Sharing the New Life with a Jew,” that messianic Jews should avoid mentioning their belief in the deity of Jesus because it makes witnessing to Jews extremely difficult. This belief has historically been rejected by all denominations of Judaism

This misleading tactic has recently become prevalent when Jews for Jesus witness in Israel and messianic believers speak with the media in Israel.

Christians of good conscious who love Jews and Israel should protest and demand full disclosure and “Truth in Advertising” from the Jews for Jesus and Messianic-Jews.

I ertainly don't believe that all Catholics are apostate, but the Catholic religion certainly is. Catholics are not alone as an apostate church.

    Christine,

Please re-read the scriptures concerning who the brethren of Jesus truly are, and who the people of God are today: they are those found to be abiding in Christ: those born again by the blood of the Lamb; those who do the will of the Father.

For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.Matthew 12:50

Ethnicity no longer determines who the brethren of Christ are.

As far as John Hagee, i have prayed and will continue to do so, that he will some day understand that truth himself. His blindness to that very important issue has kept him from evangelizing those who are Jews, and just as harmful has caused him to proclaim another ethnicity group (Arabs) as enemies, not 'worthy' of being evangelized.

Jesus died that all who will: will hear the 'good news' and see Jesus as Savior and Lord and be saved.

    John Hagee has forgotten that.

He is now become the leader of a political movement, instead of a preacher of the Gospel.

He may indeed be a statesman, as the world perceives that word,...but to a huge portion of the body of Christ, he is a brother who left his first love some years ago, replacing Christ with a piece of land.

Who determines those who do the will of the Father? (Matt. 12:50)
Since the late 1800s, Jewish people have been resettling Israel. Is this not the will of the Father, too?
In 1948, Israel became a nation once again. The only country in history to be re-established with its name, people and language (Hebrew). Does anyone think they did this on their own, without God?Despite the great dispersements throughout the world, God has kept the Jewish people together. And it is He who has been returning them to the land from the four corners of the world.
Our eyes have seen the hand of God the Father moving in the Earth. What a blessed generation we are.
I don't worship the Jewish people, I worship God the Father through Jesus Christ, His Son, in the Holy Spirit.
When the rich man came to Jesus and asked what he should do to have eternal life, Jesus did not tell him to confess him as the Messiah, he told the man to keep the commandments! (Matt. 19:16-26) But the man said he did, and he was still lacking. Jesus then told him to sell all his possessions and follow Him and the man would be complete and would have treasure in heaven. The man walked away disheartened. Jesus' disciples asked him who can be saved?
He said that with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
John 14:6 says that no one can come to the Father except through Jesus. Yet, in John 6:44 Jesus says that no one can come to Him (Jesus) unless the Father who sent him, draws him.
That is why I can say that there are Jewish people as well as Believers in Jesus as the Christ who are my brothers and sisters.
John Hagee is following the will of God. Of course he will be persecuted for it. But by whom?

As much as God loves the Jewish people, God loves the Arab people too. He loves all Muslims and Arabs just as much as He loves Jews, and not a bit less.

Without Jesus all men are lost, be they Jews or Gentiles. In Jesus there is Salvation for all, because Jesus died for all sinners.

John Hagee and the CUFI crowd's love for Jews appears to be all political. I do not see any zeal there to take the Gospel to the Jewish people. Furthermore, there is an animosity there towards the Arab and Muslim people, which is not in line with the Spirit of Christ.

I am an Arab Christian, an Assemblies of God Minister. I am privileged to lead over a million souls to Christ in my crusades, but I know that in the eyes of people like Hagee and the the CUFI crowd, I am of far less worth than that of an unsaved Jew. I find Hagee's rabble-rousing rantings most offensive and not representative of the Spirit of Jesus Christ who died for us all, whether we be Jews or Gentiles.

Christopher, please remember how Mr. Strang has no problem puffing up Hagee's hate-filled rhetoric and lies, just to bring about the end times. They couldn't care less about Jews, arabs, muslims, or anyone who they think is in their way.

    Dispicable.

I have met Mr Strang and have friends who know him very well. Mr Strang is a very good man who loves the Lord, but then he is tied in with the Far-Right political camp which is such a mix of both good and bad.

This is the thing about American Christians that often bewilders me: Good people, pro-family, pro-life but totally callous and remorseless about hundreds of thousands of deaths in Iraq. They also think that torturing people is an OK to do. They think that it is horrible when Arabs commit acts of terror, but the fact that the Israeli Army has killed twice the number of Arab civilians than Arabs have killed Israeli civilians, totally evades them! They express lots of outrage for Israeli deaths, but NO outrage over Arabs killed by Israelis. Not only that, but it is the Palestinians who are under occupation and NOT Israelis, yet it is the Israelis who are "defending themselves".

In all this, the fact that BOTH Arabs and Jews are lost and need the Gospel is lost to them. They do not preach to the Jews because the Jews supposedly have some kind of a "pseudo-salvation" by virtue of being Jews. As for the Arabs, they are "the enemy", so just forget them!

And this is how these people look at it. You cannot discuss these issues with them either, because they have the 100% truth and refuse to listen to any reason whatsoever!
